CORNWELL CUP

Wellington Representatives ANNOUNCED BY SELECTOR After a series of trials, totalling in all 17 races, Mr. L. Waddel, sole selector, announced to a meeting of the W el* lington Provincial Yacht and Motorboat Association last evening, that he had selected R. Julian (Evans Bay Club) skipper, and J. Nolan (Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club) for’ard hand, as the two Wellington representatives In the Cornwell Cup contest to be held in Lyttelton, commencing January 27. The crew will go into training immediately. In his report to the association, the selector said that the trials began on November 29, and occupied two weeks, terminating on December 12. Two visits were paid to the Heretaunga club and two of their lads were brought into Evans Bay and raced three times in different boats. In all he had these boys afloat live times. A. Gilligan, since he was seen in the last contest, had shown marked improvement as a yachtsman.

The trying-out involved 27 boys, whose ages ranged from 15 years to ISA years, and their weights varied from 8 to 12 stone. They were, without exception, very fine types of lads, embracing the bright, sparkling optimist, as well as the studious, ponderous thinker, and the gradual dropping of these lads was anything but pleasing to a selector. Seven boats in all were used in 17 races. Six were sent out eight times: three were sent out six times; and two boats were sent out three times. Most of the races were conducted opposite the Evans Bay clubhouse, over a windward and leeward course, in from light to moderate winds, northerlies, as well as southerlies, being experienced. Difficult gybes were indulged in; and the boys acquitted themselves well. Manoeuvring for positions when starting was very often well carried out. The choice was narrowed at the end of the first '/>ek from 27 to 14 boys, and at the end of the second week it was further reduced to five lads, being two skippers and three for’ard hands.

From these on December 12 the final choice was Skipper: R. Julian, age 16, weight 11 stone. For’ard hand: J. Nolan, aged 17, weight 9 stone. R. Whitcoinbe, as a skipper, was a very close runner-up. Dauilino suffered defeat in three of the trials. One of these occasions was when the ages in the first and second boats differed by only one yfcir and the weight by only 131 b. The champion of last year’s T class successfully sailed her across the line to secure- second place from a T class skipper.
