Presentation of Awafds and Certificates SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Red Cross Society certificates and Awards won during the past year were presented to the winners at a gathering held iu the Town Hall last evening. The Hon. W. E. Collins, president of the Wei-, liligton society, occupied the chair. Among those present on the platform were the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, Lady Luke ~C.8.E., the Mayoress (Mrs. Hislop), Miss S- Nathan, M.8.E., Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., and Dr. T. McKibbin, Director of Public Hygiene. Apologies for Absence were received from her Excellency the Lady Bledisloe, Bishop and Mrs. Sprott, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Hon. }l. Masters, and Dr. Ada Patterson. In opening the proceedings Dr. Collins Said that owing" to a large number of children from Petone’and the Hutt not being present some rearaangement would have to be made in the order of the projramme. In speaking of the work done 'during the' year the chairman referred to the efficiency shown by those who had fcone in for the examinations. He also referred to the wonderful work done by the Red Cross nurees throughout New Zealand, notably at the time of the epidemic and at the earthquake disaster ■ in the. Hawke’s Bay district. Another sectton of the Red Cross work was its work hipong the juniors in the schools, which iSviS only carried on by .permission of the various headmasters. . The chairman also anhounced that the Rid Cross Society of New Zealand was nbw a corporate body; it wasone’of the CO national bodies of the world. There jvere also 54 junior Red Cross bodies in the world, and he thought that if ever peace did come to the world it would be largely through the instrumentality of the junior Red Cross bodies. There was plenty of work ahead, for peace had its triumphs and disasters though it may not tie so spectacular as war. Society Congratulated. . Air. Young said that the occasion was •n important one to the community, and he tendered bis congratulations to the Society which was doing such valuable "work. It had rendered wonderful work i Wiring the Great War and throughout its •f terma th, and such was the nature of its Work that he believed it would last as lopg as civilisation lasted. The Minister then traced the history of the society, which, though only established in 1859, had now a membership of 25,000,000, roughly twenty-fire times more than the imputation of the whole of New Zealand. The Minister gave a brief history of ’rap. Red Cross Society, set out the principles and, service it stood for, and gave' tome sound advice to the young people. , Lady Luke complimented the girls on the good work they had done during the year. After hearing the nice things said about the children it was a pity that there

were not more adults present to hear what had been said. She gave credit to the girls who went in for Bed Cross work as they had a great dea] to do at school without outside study, and in that respect great praise was due to the teachers who put themselves out to teach the girls the principles of good health and hygiene. Lady Luke presented the home nursing salver to the winners, the Wellington East Girls’ College. Mr. R. A. Wright and Dr. McKibbin also addressed the gathering.
