OBITUARY

Captain T. A. Dykes . A well-known master mariner, Captain T. A. Dykes, died at his home. <hristchurch, yesterday morning, aged in Taypost. opposite Dundee in Fife, Captain Dykes served his apprenticeship in sail in the West Indian t rade. On securing his master s ticket he was given command in the service of the Thompson line out of Dundee in the Western Ocean trade. In 190-j Captain Dykes brought out. to New Zealand the new steamer Apanui for the Northern Steam Ship Co.. Auckland. He then had command of coastal vessels until lie joined the service of the New Zealand Government ns mate of the Hinemoa. In 1908 be was appointed examiner of masters and mates at Auckland, a position -which he held until 1918, when he was appointed master of the Government training ship Amokura, and in 1920 he was appointed superintendent of marine and examiner of niastets and mates at Lyttelton, a position which he held until he retired in 1927. , Since his retirement.
