SCHOOL YEAR OVER

Wellington College PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY Address by Mayor The singing of school songs, cheers for the principal, the masters, and others prominent in the life of the school, and the distribution of prizes marked the close last evening of another year in the history of Wellington College. Addresses were given by the principal, Mr. AV. A. Armour, M.A., M.Sc., who was accompanied by Mrs. Armour, the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, who is an okl boy of the college, and Mr. G. A. Mitchell, chairman of the college board of governors. The Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, presented the prizes. Among those present were Sir Cecil Day, representing the Governor-Gen-eral. Lord Bledisloe; the members of the college Board of Governors; Colonel R. St. J. Beere, who presented the old boys’ prizes; Mr. R. Darroch, who presented the Navy League prizes; and representatives of various public and educational bodies. Also present was Mr. Gallic, donor of the Oscar Vicker Gallie Memorial Bursary, who gave a short address.

“It is an inspiring thing to have the opportunity of standing in this hall and addressing the boys of this, my old school,” said the Mayor, who briefly referred to some recollections of happenings when he was at the college, and who made some very breezy references to the holidays and the school year, and what, they meant to the masters, the pupils, and the parents. In conclusion, he besought the boys to lire tip to the words of their school song, “Forty Years On,” and go through life shoulder to shoulder, displaying a team spirit, for, he said, “we are not individuals, but are all parts of New Zealand, and of the British nation.” The principal, Mr. W. A. Armour, in his annual report, dealt at length with various educational problems and made reference to the numerous activities of the college during the year. The forthcoming departure from AVellington of the Rev. H. E. K. Fry, Vicar of St. Mark’s Church, and Mrs. Fry, was mentioned by Mr. Armour, who spoke in terms of the highest praise of their efforts on behalf of the college and its pupils. Mr. Mitchell addressed the boys briefly. Before calling on the Mayoress to present the prizes, Mr. Armour asked her to accept, in lieu of the customary bouquet, a framed plaque, bearing the college insignia. This was similar to the plaque presented to the prefects and, Mr. Armour said, made Mrs. Hislop an honorary prefect. The Prize List. The prize list, is as follows: — SPECIAL PRIZES.
