OBITUARY

Captain J. W. Cameron Captain Joseph AVilliam Cameron, head stevedore at Auckland for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, died suddenly at Auckland on Sunday night. The late Captain Cameron, who was wodely known and respected in shipping circles, had been in ill-health for some mouths, but had recently gone back to work. Captain Cameron was born at Connah’s Quay, Scotland, on June 6, 1883. For some years he served in small coastal vessels on the New Zealand coast, and joined the service of the Union Company on May 27, 1911, as third officer of the Koonya. He was

appointed second officer of the Pukaki in November, 1912, .and chief officer of the old Klni in March, 1915, subsequently serving in that capacity in the Whangape, Kurow, Walhora, old Monowai, Komata, Manuka, and Waihemo. In April, 1923, the late Captain Cameron was appointed master of the Ramona, and later held command of the Kittawa, Kahlka, Corinna, Kamo, Kokiri, Ngatoro, I’oolta, and Kaiapoi. He resigned from the company’s service on April 30, 1928, to take up the position of head stevedore at Auckland for the Shaw, Savill Company, which position he held until his death on Sunday. Mrs. Rod, who died on Friday evening, had been ailing for about twelve months past. She was much respected for her kindliness and benevolence. The late Mrs. Rod was a daughter of the late Mr. Paul Coffey, formely a shipwright, well known in the earlier days of Wellington, and a sister of Mr. william Coffey, at one time known in Press circles in this city. She leaves a family of two daughters, Mrs. Lewis Gordon, of England, and Mrs. Stella Litt, and one sou, Mr. Selwyn Rod.
