DEATH AT SEA

Sir James Maxwell, K.C.M.G. Information has reached the local office of Thomas Cook and Son of the death at sea of Sir James Crawford Maxwell, K.C.M.G. Sir James Maxwell died on the Orient liner Oronsay, which is due at Melbourne from England on December 19. Sir James and Lady Maxwell were to have stayed in Australia for some three weeks and were in the course of their arranged itinerary to have arrived in AA’ellington on January 10 on an extensive and privately escorted tour of the Dominion. Sir James Crawford Maxwell, K.C.M.G., C.M.G.. K.8.E., M.A., M. 8., C.M., M.D, was up till a few months ago Governor and Coininander-inChief of Northern Rhodesia, a post he had occupied with conspicuous success since 1927

Sir James, who was 03 years of age, was the son of the late Mr. Janies Maxwell, of Dundee, Scotland. He graduated at the Edinburgh University, and in 1897 was appointed District Medical Officer at Sierra Leone, in which position he gained the West Africa medal with clasp. In 1900 Sir James was appointed District Commissioner in the same dependency, and after being the First Class Resident in Nigeria from 1914 to 1920. was appointed Colonial Secretary for Sierra Leone in 1920, and for the Gold Coast in 1922-27, when he was promoted to Governor of Northern Rhodesia, with headquarters at Livingstone. Lady Maxwell was a daughter of the late Mr. T. J. Davies, of Gloucester.
