THE RACING WORLD

SHATTER INJURED

Galloped on at Riccarton AUCKLAND PROSPECTS Fast Passage Going Well (By “The Watcher.”) S' Shatter was galloped on at Riccarton on Saturday morning. Ho was bandaged and given strong work afterward, but it may affect his Auckland prospects. Kakara Sold. G. Murray Aynsley has sold Kakara to Mr. G. J. Barton, of Dunedin., She will be raced for her new owner at Waikouaiti and Oamaru.

Gaine Carrington Injured. The new owner of Gaine Carrington has been unfortunate in bis purchase. The colt was spelling at Bacchus Marsh, and had one-half of a hoof torn off while careering round a paddock. It will take at least five months before the injured limb heals.

Apprentice Allowance for Junipers. To develop fresh blood in the ranks of jumping riders, the Victorian Racing Club is giving serious consideration co extending the apprentice allowances at present governing flat races to crosscountry events. There are several trainers with jumping horses only waiting this fiat to give riding to apprentices indentured to them.

Fast Passage. Recent reports credited Fast Passage with being on the verge of a breakdown, but so far she is pulling up well at the end of her gallops, and she may survive her Auckland Cup preparation, for she is very forward.

In the Country. The Diacquenod gelding Hard Words, who did his early racing from the stable of J. T. Jamieson, is now doing the “smalls” in Victoria. At Bendigo vii November 30 he won the Flying Handicap, 5 furlongs. He started a hot favourite, and beat six others in Imin. 1 2-ssee.

Manawatu /Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer _meeting, to be held on December 26. 27 and 20, also final payment for the 29th Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

Taranaki Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's summer meeting, to be held on December 26 and 27, will close on Friday, at 9 p.m. Cotton on Chokebore Team. D. Cotton will do the riding for Sir Charles Clifford at Manawatu and Wairarapa. It is anticipated that A. E. Ellis will be able to ride Fast Passage and Cricket Bat at Auckland. Has Not Maintained Form. La Poupee was a good 2-year-old, but her subsequent form has been disappointing. She showed a glimpse of ability at Woodville, blit she has not trained on as might have been expected. She has always gone well on soft tracks, and it was on such going at Trentham that she gave signs of coming right a few months ago. A Good Hack. Senegal looks like doing good service for Mr. K. McK. Duncan. He followed his win at Feilding with a sterling effort at Woodville, and with luck he would have been hard to bent. Senegal is out of Kinsem by Nigger Minstrel, and comes of a very solid family. Last of the King Marks. Shrew, who won the principal handicap on the second day at Woodville, lasts well as be was foaled in 1924, and he is the last of the King Marks now racing or showing any form. He should be a lightweight possibility in the Manawatu Cup if a suitable rider can be procured. Failed to Improve. . . Statuary showed promise in h’.s first jumping essay at Hastings last month, but he put up two moderate performances at Woodville. Improvement will be necessary for him to do any good at the game. / My Own. My Own did not show much form either at Feilding or Woodville, and she can

have only a remote chance in the Aucklanu Cup In view of her recent form she may be raced nearer home than Auckland during the holidays. Suspended Jockeys. The judicial committee of the Takapuna Jockey Club at the recent meeting decided to suspend R. Mcßae'and 8. J. Cammick for one month for careless rid- , ing. This meant that these jockeys would be unable to ride on the first day of the Auckland summer meeting, and the Takapuna Jockey Club have now recommenced the district committee to reduce tnc suspension so that they will be able to ride on the first day at Ellerslie. From New Zealand Stock. The Tasmanian Guineas, decided a fortnight ago, was won by a black colt, Hifflibronev, by the Gainsborough horse High Art from Lahinch, a New Zealand-bred mare by Kilbroney from Vanna. by Charlemagne 11. from Savannah, by Stepnmk, Highb/mey was bred by Mr, P. Miller, New South Wales, and sold by him as a yearling in Sydney for 50 guineas. Argentic on Easy JList. Argentic and Monastic will not iulhl their engagements at Auckland. Argentic has been on the easy list for a few davs. having jarred a joint. Though not serious, his trainer prefers to take no risks The horse will have a short rest and then will be got ready for Trentham. Monastic will probably go to Waikouaiti and Oamaru. Brother to Red Heckle. T H Gillett has a beautifully-moulded full-brother to Red Heckle .learning the rudiments of galloping at Riccarton, and he is proving an apt pupil. He is not to be hurried, but may be given a couple pt races later in the season. By then, his trainer will be able to get an idea as to whether he is a Derby colt. A companion for the colt is a three-year-o d geld.'”g bv Panmure from Bran Pie, by Buckwheat. The same trainer has also taken up again the six-year-old Errantry who has been out for 12 months. Ibis fellow has done very little racing, but as he is by Paladin from Divinia, he should make a good jumper. This Week’s Racing. The annual meeting of the W aipa club, at Te Awamutu. and the annual meeting of the Banks Peninsula club, at Riccarton. arc the only racing fixtures this week. These meetings will clear the way for the holiday racing. R. Lewis’s Birthday. R. Lewis, the veteran jockey. was j>4 years of age on Wednesday, November 30. He was born at Clunes on November 30, 1878. He has been riding in races for many years, and has. won practically every important race, in Victoria, and has also been successful in New South (t ales and the other States. He has retained his form in a marvellous manner, and displayed all his old skill in winning the Bendigo Cup on Roc Inst mpnth. He has been first jockey for Mr. b. E. D. Clarke for more than 30 years, and in 1904 it on the Champagne Stakes for that owner on Emir. Mr. Clarke is also the owner of Roc. who scored at Bendigo. English Jockey’s Hl Luck. Harry Wragg, second to Gordon Richards on the English winning jockeys list, rode his 102nd winner for the season at Newcastle on October 19, and.had high hopes of beating his own previous best total of HO winners during a racing year. Later in the jjfternoon, however he was thrown by a two-year-old and broke his right leg. Ridden the World Over. . F. Herbert, an English jockey, has clear rights to the designation of ’ much travelled.” He has already ridden winners in eighteen countries. Last mouth he sailed for Egypt, where he will ride during the English winter. . A number of years ago Herbert rode in Australia, where he was mostly noted for his vigour and use of the whip. In 1918 he won the Cup at Kyneton. in Victoria, on the New Zealand-bred Beltane, for the late Mr. 8. P. Mackay. Beltane had acquired a reputation for pleasing himself, but he probably never forgot his first acquaintance with F. Herbert, of England. The race was run over, eight and a half furlongs, aud from the word “go” Herbert never let up with the whip. The astonished Beltane led all the way and scrambled home by half a head from Lucky Bean, a performer popularly known as “the Carbine of the Bush,” who had got badly away on this occasion. Legionnaire Dead. . Legionnaire, who was imported by the Kia Ora studmaster. Mr. P. Miller, died on November 30 at Messrs. Harris Bros, stud. Holbrook. Legionnaire was one ot the best two-year-olds of his year in England. and was a son of 1 halaris. from Speean Bridge, by Spearmint. Included in his progeny were such good winners as Legislator, First Legion. Calina, Vendique. Questionnaire, and Frontier. Thieves Busy. , > It was recently cabled that thieves had stolen both gold cups won by Mr. L. Eccles’s Yarramba at Moonce valley and Williamstown last month They also visited the Victorian trainer L. 4. Godby s home at Glenhuntly recently, and robbed him of a gold chronograph, pair of field glasses, and a large sum of money. M hen he returned home after the settling, Godby hid the money in his room. Godby retired at a quarter to twelve, and the jirst iukling he had of the robbery was when he went to get his chronograph in the morning. English Riding School. Captain F. C. Hitchcock is starting a riding school for apprentices at Lewes. England. A number of trainers will send him lads for a term’s tuition. It is suggested that the lads’ course.of instruction should last approximately six weeks. They will be taught how to ride with a good firm seat and good hands, how to handle a nervous or fractious young horse, points to note in exercising and riding gallops, stable duties, and lectures on general subjects. At th? end of the first fortnight a report will be sent to the trainer of the lad’s progress. This seems to be an admirable idea, and it may save trainers the trouble of being encumbered with lads not suitable to be apprenticed before the indentures are signed. CUP HORSES GALLOP Fast Passage Pulls Up Well WORK AT RICCARTON The weather was fine for training at Riccarton on Saturday morning, and the inside of the trial grass track was in good order (says the •'Star' ). A lot or useful work was done by horses with early engagements. As usual, galloping the reverse way by candidates for Auckland, occupied attention early. Fast Passage galloped a mile, in Imm. 41see., and pulled up well. Cricket Bat registered a similar effort, while 1' racas ran five furlongs comfortably. Silver Ring and Shatter went out to gallop a mile in company. When going on to (he track, from the inside, they became fractious, running over the crossing toward the sheds, Shatter being galloped on. Eventually they worked separately, Silver Ring doing a mile in Imin. 42sec„ while Shatter was not fully extended over seven furlongs. Shatter received a cut on the near hind joint, and was a triflic stiff when he cooled off after his work. Jaloux, with Azalea as a mate for. the last six. ran nine furlongs in linin. 57see. Gay Crest and Tout le Mond took l.min. 34 2-ssec for seven furlongs, but did it comfortably. The Quorn sprinted half a mile m Silver Scorn and Berate wound up the reverse work by taking 2min. lOsec. for a mile and a quarter. They did the first mile in Imin. 41 3-ssec.. but. Berate eased up after reaching the crossing. Concentrate, with Martian. Chief for the last six furlongs, ran a mile in Imm. 45 3-ssec. SUSPENDED JOCKEYS Period is Reduced Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 12. A reduction in the period of one ™onth s suspension imposed on jockeys, R. Mcßae and S. J. Cammick for careless riding at Takapuna, was made by the Auckland District Committee. The term will now expire on December 24. The running of the President s Handicap at the Dargaville races on December 3 formed the subject of a. special meetino, of the Auckland District Committee of"the New Zealand Racing Conference. A report from the Dargaville Racing Club concerning nn inquiry held by its judicial committee after the. race was considered. The district committee decided to rUcv the report back to the Dargaville. Racing Club for furither investigation with a request that it should report at an early date. AUCKLAND TROTS Cup Meeting Handicaps By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 12.
