The American philosopher Emerson indicated an original reason; —"That dogs respect and will not attack you in good clothes." Many an unfortunate tramp has proved that at least dogs will attack you in ragged clothes. Emerson was probably correct in his theory. And if dogs can differentiate between good dressing and bad, how much more keenly human beings can. The world accepts a man very largely on face value. Who, then, can complain that the world refuses to accept him. when he himself invites rejection by the way he dresses? Making a living is more difficult just now than it ever has been: to make a difficult job more difficult still by neglecting appearance is bad economy.
