THE RACING WORLD

FAVOURITES WIN • a ■. ■ ' ' '' i ' Racing at Carterton GAY COURT’S CUP Solitaire II Wins a Double SPRINT TO LYRICAL (By “The Watcher.’’) Favourites had a good innings at the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club on Saturday, winning live of the eight races. Atholspear defeated Gay Court in the County Cup, but as the result of an inquiry into jostling, the placings were reversed. Lyrical defeated the favourite Equitant in the Bunny Memorial, and Eminent won the open seven-furlong event. The Trentnam-trained Solitaire II won a hack double. She was ridden by B. H. Morris. The Ricearton lightweight, A. Eastwood, attended the meeting, and he also rode a double, Gay Court and Lyrical. - The weather was warm and showery, the attendance being well up to the average. The track was in good order. Three dividends were paid on fields of nine or over, and two in five-horse fields.

All things considered, the club did well to put through £6225/10/-, which is only £Bl4 less than the £7039/10/- handled twelve months ago. Mr. H. J. Harman, owner of Gaj Court, wishes it known that the action taken in the Cup race was not the result of any protest on his part. Favourite in Maiden. Red Top, equal favourite with the Clangor—Meritor bracket for the Aoviee Stakes, scored a narrow win, but he would have been, very unlucky to lose. Meritor began best with Late Jest, Cape of Good Hope, and Maypay, and Red lop in behind on the rails; Rhea and Milnrow handy. Meritor, Cape of Good Hope and Late Jest were in line into the straight from Red Top, who lost his place. Meritor soon weakened, and finally Red Top got clear to get up and head off Cape of Good Hope, with Late Jest a close third. Milnrow was fourth, with Rhea. Clangor and Rene Belle next. Red Top got a bad passage, which nearly cost him the race. Otherwise he would have won easily. Clangor was disappointed in trying to get tip on the inner in the straight, or he would have been hard to beat. Meritor showed speed, but ran greenly. Late Jest showed definite improvement, and Rhea shaped promisingly. Favourite Again. ' The favourite, Kahunoke, scored very easily in the Highweight. Golden Horn and Azure cleared away in front in the first half, putting a big break on the others. Kahunoke went after them over the last stages, and had no difficulty in beating the tiring Azure. Kalmuck was a fair third, with Golden Horn fourth, and Te Ante next. Bright Song ran off the course going out of the straight, and took no part in the running. Azure ran himself to a standstill chasing Golden Horn, but Kahunoke won well. Won and Lost. Gay Court, a warm favourite; and Atholspear had the race for the County Cup to themselves. Gay Court, on the rails, with Atholspear outside him, led throughout from the other three, who lay handy, closely bunched. In the run home Atholspear just headed off Gay Court. The other three finished in a bunch two lengths back, with Pahu third, and Stanchion An inquiry into jostling in the straight resulted in the first two places being reversed, and A. O’Neill, rider of Atholspear, was suspended for three months. Gay Court got his tongue over the bit early in the race, and his performance was a good on£, for in addition to this handicap, he pulled very hard for the first five furlongs. Pahu, Joie de Vai, and Stanchion had every chance. Solitaire II Improves. Solitaire II led all the way in the hack six, and won comfortably.. Swift and Sure, on the rails, went with her to the straight, with Purse and Posy next. Once in line Solitaire II came away and won comfortably, Posy just as easily second from Purse. Swift and Sure was fourth, with Lady Ronald and Clangor next. It was a good thing for Solitaire IL Posy was a trifle unlucky, and Lady Ronald more so, being last away.

Lyrical Beats Equitant. The four horses in the Bunny Memorial ran in line for a furlong and then Lyrical drew out with Patearoa to lead Equitant to the straight. Equitant challenged when in line, but Lyrical held on for a head victory. Sir Pombal was a moderate third.

Lyrical stuck just too well for Equitant", who pulled up a trifle lame. The winner has been a good proposition for her new owner. Greenhorn Surprises. Aroma, favourite for the hack seven, was never well placed. Late Jest endeavoured to win all the way. Emotion, Azure, Red Top, and Greenhorn followed him to the straight, where Greenhorn swept forward and cut down Late Jest for a decisive win. Flower was a fair third, with Emotion fourth, then Ben Hur, Joie de Vai, Aroma, and Cape Fair. The winner has never been previously in the money, but he won handsomely and should be heard of again. Late Jest, Emotion, and Red Top had every chance, but Red Top was in such a good position throughout that his sudden disappearance entering the straight may have been due to something which would excuse his defeat. Gets Run on Kails. Still another favourite in Eminent scored in the open seven furlong event, but he was lucky in getting a run on the rails when Manifesto hung out entering the straight. Manifesto was always going well in front, but when he hung out it gave Eminent, who had waited for just such a happening, his chance to slip through, and he accepted it. Manifesto was drawing up to him again and was going the better at the post. Cluny was a fair third. He was going particularly ’ well throughout, but was not favoured by the best of runs. Pahu, having his second race, ran poorly. Solitaire II Again. Penalised 51b. for her previous win, Solitaire II won again in the hack scurry that concluded the programme. Right Bower and Solitaire II began best, and led all the way, the favourite, Speed, getting off poorly. Right Bower drew away slightly at the straight entrance, but Solitaire II put in a solid finish and wore him down to win going away. Rhea, who was always handy, finished a good third with Araios fourth, followed by Lady Ronald, Teastream, and Speed. Solitaire II owed a good deal of her win to the alertness of B. H. Morris at the barrier, but all the same she showed very solid form. Right Bower had every chance, but Speed was. never in a good position. Rhea is an improver.
