PREFERENCE LOST

Empire Goods Transhipped Abroad London, Nov. 17, In the House of Commons Mr. L. Hore-Belisha, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, informed Mr. P. J. Hannon (C.) that Empire goods on an optional bill of landing, transhipped at a foreign port, were not entitled to preference on landing in Britain. Mr. Hannon suggested a discussion with Importers with a view to modifying the law to meet cases where the goods had not entered into the foreign country’s commerce. The Minister undertook to confer with Mr. Hannon.

Mr. Hore-Belisha’s statement embraces such cases as a shipment of oranges on which duty, was charged, neutralising the effect of good sales on the Continent
