Address on Life in Majorca

On Tuesday afternoon Miss Iva MeEldowney gave an interesting talk on her life in Majorca, one of the Balearic Isles, south-east of Spain. Particularly beautiful are the islands in spring when the almond blossoms are in full bloom.

The language of the inhabitants is a cross between Majorcan and French, aud as Miss McEldowney and two friends are the only English folk, all their business is transacted through the manager of the hotel. The natives are simple, hospitable and generous, so that one refrains from enthusing over any of tbeir possessions for fear it will be readily presented to them. Market day sees the villagers arrayed in tbeir gaily-coloured costumes. Fruit and wine form their main diet, while butter is an unknown quantity, lard being substituted. An interesting fact was that Miss McEldowney and her'two friends rent, a ten-roomed house at the modest rental of £lB a year, while for a domestic they pay a sum .of 5/- a month in wages. Bull-fighting is a great attraction, and the Easter pageant, which resembles on a small scale the Oberammergau festival, is a feature of the isle. Miss Batham. president, accorded on behalf of the club a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, and afternoon tea brought the delightful gathering to a close. ' • •
