WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Meeting at Otaki There was a splendid attendance at the November meeting of the Otaki Women’s Institute, which was held in the theatre, Mrs. G. White presiding. After the business part of the meeting was over, Mrs. J. Warnock gave a demonstration * on making wool quilts, using wool from the fleece. Mrs. Warnock explained her method of scouring the wool, clipping it off the skin, and finally how to make it into quilts which are equal in warmth to eiderdown. Mrs. White also gave a useful demonstration, by cutting a square piece of material in half eornerwise, then joining up the straight sides. Yards and yards of bias binding may be cut, all joined up into one long piece. A competition was held,, Mrs. Saveli being the winner. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Taylor, Morgan, Southgate, Ellis, Shaw and Tooby, who served a nice afternoon tea. Mrs. Love won a cake which was given by Miss Hayden for a guessing competition. The institute is also indebted to Mr. Richards for the use of the meeting room, gratis, for six months, and to Mrs. Duncan Wilson for the gift of two dozen afternoon tea spoons. Wimbledou-Herbertville. The monthly meeting of the Wimble-don-Herbertville Institute was recently held. Mrs. Herrick, president, introMrs. Rolleston, who gave a very interesting talk on Empire trading and children’s clubs in London. Mrs. Hales, senr., proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Rolleston for her interesting talk. A darning competition was won by Mrs. A. Morgans. Mrs. R. Hales gave a demonstration on cake icing. The hostesses were Mrs. Herrick, Misses Speedy and Mrs. Watts. Nuliaka., There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Nuhaka Women’s Institute, when Sister May

presided. Owing to' the flower show being held next day, many of the members were busy with preparations. A wonderful collection of needlework, etc., was displayed by Mrs. E. Bluck, an old resident of the district, this work being done in her girlhood. Beautiful crochet, tapestry work, and a Paisley shawl which had been worn by her grandmother were among the collection.

The results of the competitions judged 1 by Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Glenny and Mrs. C. McKenzie were as follow :—Girdle scones: Miss Melrose, 1; Sister May 2; Mrs. Monteath. 3. Dish of home-made sweets: Mrs. Moore, 1; Miss C. Monteath, 2; Miss E. Monteath, 3. Gift for Christmas tree: Mrs. Stewart, 1; Mrs. Monteath, 2; Miss C. Monteath, 3. Cheltenham. Mrs. E. E. Short again presided over a gathering of nearly 100 at the Cheltenham Hall on Wednesday afternoon for the November monthly meeting. The president announced that a visitors’ book bad been purchased for the institute and Mrs. W. Booth was put in charge of obtaining signatures of visitors to the institute. Correspondence was read from the two overseas links, and it was decided to send copies of the institute calendars to them both for the New Year. A demonstration on chair-covering was given by the president, and the work was shown on a miniature chair specially made for the purpose. A roll-call “What I would like most for Christmas,” brought forth some amusing replies. A recitation by Miss J. Billman and then afternoon tea followed by the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close. The hostesses were Mesdames Swalnson, Salmond and V. Smith. New Branch Formed. A branch of the Women’s Institute was formed at Horoeka on Tuesday, November 8. Miss Maddever, w-lio was accompanied by Miss Halley, gave an interesting address to a large gathering of women in the schoolroom and outlined the aims and objects of the institute. All were unanimous in forming a branch, and 22 members were enrolled. Mrs. W. Lunt was elected president, Mrs. E. Clemens vice-president, and Mrs. T. J. Whitta hon. secretary.
