TRADE WITH EAST

Exhibiting N.Z. Goods GOVERNMENT INTENTIONS In replying that it was not possible for a display of New Zealand goods to be made at the exhibition at HongKong this month, the Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, has informed the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation that an Empire Fair of about a week’s duration will be held at Hong-Kong about the end of May next year. This would probably provide an excellent opportunity for a display of New Zealand products. The department’s-honorary representative in Hong-Kong, Mr. S. T. Williamson, had been requested to keep the Minister advised on matters relating to the fair.Recently the federation forwarded to the Minister a resolution expressing the 1 opinion that in lieu of reducing the finances of the department as recommended by the National Expenditure Commission, the Government could to the national gain expend the present vote in a stronger effort to develop overseas markets for the Dominion’s exportable goods. The Minister has replied concurring in the-views expressed. He said he was strongly of opinion that in times of severe depression such as the present, no action should bo taken which would have the effect of restricting or hampering the development of trade. On the contrary, it appeared to him that such a time was one which called for greater activity. “I feci sure the Prime Minister agrees with me,” he added, “that the vote of the Department of Industries and Commerce should not be reduced so that the extension of our trade and the development of our markets may receive every consideration and attention and not be hindered in any way.”
