CYCLONIC STORM
Disturbance in Australia TELEGRAPH HINDRANCES (Rec. October 31, 9.15 p.m.) Sydney, Oct. 31. The Telegraph Department reports that the most serious breakdown for years has been caused by a cyclonic storm which damaged sections of the lines of both the East-West railway service and the Telegraph Department in the neighbourhood of the South Australian border. « The Eastern Cable Company’s cable between Adelaide and Western Australia was used to assist to overcome the difficulties until the telegraph lines were sufficiently restored, after nearly forty hours’ strenuous work, to overtake the traffic. Reports from Adelaide state that a disturbance with a spectacular thunderstorm passed over the city‘on Saturday night. Though the wind was not more than 32 miles an hour in velocity, a house at Torrensville was unroofed by an unusual eddy. The State Meteorologist, Mr. Mares, has warned shipping that a very severe disturbance is moving eastward from the south-eastern corner of Australia, and is expected to cause gales with rough to high seas south of latitude 30 degrees.
