PROFESSIONAL BOXING
N.Z. Lightweight Title HUGHES BEATS OXLEY Dominion Special Service Auckland, Oct. 31. A professional boxing contest for the lightweight championship of New' Zealand between Archie Hughes (Auckland), the holder, and Ted Oxley (Pallia tua), the challenger, was won by Hughes on points, nt the end of the scheduled fifteen rounds. The decision met with a mixed reception by the large crowd present. Hughes became a little more aggressive in the ninth round, which was fairly even, and he claimed an advantage in the tenth and eleventh rounds. The twelfth was Oxley's, and there was little between the pair. In the concluding three rounds the announcement of the verdict in favour of the title-holder was the signal for a loud outburst of hooting. The contest was the brightest that has been seen in Auckland for some time. It. was a willing encounter all the way, the pair exchanging punches freely from the first gong.
