Bible-in-Schools

Sir, —I am sorry if I misrepresented “Headmaster’s” activities in connection with the religious instruction conducted for twenty years (under his auspices) in his school, .but have I really misrepresented him? He states that the religious instruction was conducted under the "Nelsion system.” Now, it appears from his own statement of the case that the religious instruction was conducted within school hours, and, if it was so, that was not the Nelson system but a disingenuous method of defying the law! He admits that “many Catholics” attended the school, and that they were taken in (not “drafted.” into!) a separate room by an assistant, while the Protestanls were receiving religious instruction in another room under what he disingenuously callsi the Nelson system! Can he, candidly, tell us that he (the headmaster) took no part in the religious instruction? As a State Servant his) duty demanded bis services with those doing secular work, not with those, illegally, receiving religious instruction! “Headmaster’s” honour and honesty are not safeguarded by the fact that his board and committee may have connived at a -breach of the la>v. It was his duty to apprise the Minister of Education or the Department of the illegality.—l am, etc., LAW AND ORDER. Wellington, October 27.
