N.Z. Consumption of Butter, Cheese and Milk

Sir, —Is it not time that some of our farmers’ organisations used some of their money and started a vigorous campaign all over New Zealand to urge our people to use more butter and cheese and drink more milk? ■ Now that the warm weather is coming not so much meat and wool is needed. Many homes in New Zealand never see cheese, and yet we expect England to double her consumption and give big prices for if. We need in New Zealand a stable price level, not one fluctuating with the London market. There are 78,000 relief workers iu New Zealand tp-day not averaging £2 per week in wages, and many with large families to keep. Is it possible to believe the limit of- consumption has been reached by the consumers of dairy produce in New Zealand? I think not, with 75,000 insufficiently fed to-day. We must produce more and we must in New Zealand consume more of our own production. If butter, cheese, and milk were cheaper and a vigorous campaign carried on all over New Zealand one would very soon see that double the consumption would be possible and all would benefit —producer, distributor, and consumer —and there would be less relief workers. Every school child taking his lunch should have cheese included in his bag, and most nourishing dishes can also be made from cheese. Cheese should be sold at 8d per lb, butter 1/- per lb, and milk at 3d per quart all over New Zealand. More labour must be employed on the farms—huge profits must not be expected; those dai s have gone.—-I am, etc., FARMER’S WIFE. October 25.
