"Surely,” writes “Obi Settler,” "the Prime Minister does not intend at the present time making fresh appointments to the Upper House, but,” adds the correspondent, “if he does why not reappoint Sir Heaton Rhodes, who has had a long training in statesmanship After an expression of opinion on the appointment to the Council of novices with no political experience, the correspondent continues: —“We are waiting to hear if the Prime Minister intends bringing in a Bill to reduce the number of members of the Lower House. Why should the four chief towns have so many members—one or at most two should be sufficient. Again, why should Wellington members and -their wives have free railway passes? No members with the exception of Cabinet Ministers and the Leader of the Opposition should have free passes all over New Zealand. Members and their wives should bare passes to Wellington at the beginning of the session, and baek to their homes at the end of the session. Mr. Forbes should economise, but. alas, the expenditure goes on, and we older settlers who worked bard and saved have to pay for it.”
