Meeting of Council The Upper Hutt Borough Council held its regular meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, presiding. There were present:—Crs. G. IL Guthrie, J. Blewman, A. Howell, T. R. Jameson, and J. T. Hazelwood, With regard to the recent conference concerning heavy traffic fees, and to the request for a distribution of the fees received by the Wellington City Council for the current licensing year, the Wellington town clerk advised that the council would make available immediately to the local bodies concerned one full quarter’s fee on the basis of the magistrate’s award, which was in force until May 31 last, provided that the Upper Hutt council forwarded an undertaking under seal agreeing to an adjustment to give effect to the decision of the Minister of Transport immediately his decision was known. The council agreed to carry out the instructions. The secretary of the Upper Hutt branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, wrote asking for permission to hold a street sale of roses in November. Permission had previously been granted to another society to hold a street day.that month, and in view of a resolution which stipulated that only one street day could be held in a month, the council decided to set up a sub-committee to interview the respective secretaries to see if an amicable arrangement could be made, and in such an event to have power to act A request for a reduction in the price of hawkers’ licenses and for a restriction on the issue of licenses, was received from four ratepayers and residents of the borough. The council decided to grant a rebate of 75 per cent, on annual hawkers’ licenses issued to bona fide residents of Upper Hutt, if paid within 14 days of demand. STORM-WATER PROBLEM Eastern Area of Petone An explanation of the Petone Borough Council’s difficulty in' arranging for the prevention of flooding in the eastern area of Petone was received at the annual meeting of the Petone Ratepayers’ Association. In a letter the council pointed out that to prevent flooding, a separate stormwater system would be required, with adequate pumps to discharge water into the river. This would involve the outlay of thousands of pounds, which the council could not afford at present. An effort had been made, without success, to induce the Public Works Department to finance the bulk of the work as an unemployment measure. Mr. V. A. Noble, who is a member of the council, suggested that the association" petition the department. He observed that when finance became available, the prevention of flooding vvould be the first job to be undertaken by the council. Mr. A. Scholefield, another member of the council, explained that there had always been trouble with the system in the eastern area, and when increased building had taken place the flooding had been accentuated. He. assured the .association that the council was concerned about the flooding, but it was a question of finance.
