THE SALUTE
In olden days only freemen wore hats. Slaves were bareheaded. For a freeman to remove his hat was a symbol of allegiance and courtesy. A soldier. however, could not remove his helmet because there was usually a ebln strap to it. But he would go through the form of raising his hand ns if to raise his helmet, and thus the custom of saluting began.
