A VISIT TO MOON LAND

A TALE OF THE MOON FAIRIES It was night time, and outside Nancy’s bedroom the moon was casting silvery shadows all round the room, and on her bed was a silvery moonbeam. “I wish I could go up to the moon,” she said, pouting. “I am sure Mr. Moon is beckoning to me.” “So you shall, if you wish to,” said a bell-like voice close by. Looking up. Nancy saw a little fairy tripping down the moonbeam. She was dressed in a scarlet bodice, with a spring green skirt, shaped like a poppy. In her flowing black hair stars glistened and gleamed. “Could I really?” asked Nancy, clapping her hands.

The fairy nodded, and, saying a few words which made Nancy smaller, took her hand and led her up the moonbeam staircase. At last they arrived at the Moon King’s palace. It was a gorgeous sight to Nancy, as it was made of cream marble, and glistened like millions of pearls. Fairies, elves, brownies, and star pixies flitted about for it was a ball. Nancy knew. But the real fun began when' the programme commenced. Yooloo, the moon brownie, sang very sweetly of the beauty of the Moon King’s palace and ballroom. Fairy Oomee and Elf Suippity, the dancing champions, danced before the audience and ent balled them with their airy grace. Pixie ruckle’s orchestra struck up a minuet, while Yooloo and Oornf-e joined in. singing the chorus. Then camo the sad lime of going home. The little fairy who had brought Nancy to Moonland escorted her to the end of the moonbeam staircase. Next day when Nancy told Nurse she said Na new had dreamt the whole thing, but, if you knew her as well as I do, you’d never believe such nonsense, ’cause Nurse doesn't know. —Original, by “Nonnie the Gnome,” aged 11, Napier.
