THE RACING WORLD

RECORD DIVIDEND

HORSES FOR SOUTH Fasti Passage Unpenalised SILVOX BREAKS DOWN Melbourne Cup Opening (By "The Watcher.”) The New Zealand Cup candidate Chopin went south last night to fulfil engagements at the C.J.C. meeting. Red Manfred also came in from Trentham and went down to Iliccarton. Handicaps. There is no appearance of a rehandieap for Fast Passage in the New Zealand Cup for her win in the Pearce Handicap on Monday, so it must be accepted that Mr. Henrys decided not to penalise her. There Is little doubt that Korokio has proved a thorn in the side of the handicapper. As pointed out at the time of the weights she was exceptionally well in at 7.5 for a winner of an Oaks Stakes. Her form has amply proved this, and to penalise Fast Passage now, whom Korokio beat in the Oaks, would be hard. At the same time, it makes the additional 31b. on Historic for his Sydney win a lop-sided arrangement. That Mr. Henrys realises he erred in regard to Korokio he amply demonstrates in the handicap for the Riccarton Handicap, nine furlongs, on Clip day. He gives Korokio topweight, 9.8, which is 311 b. above her Cup weight. Other. Cup horses engaged are Chopin, at 181 b. above Cup handicap. Red Sun, 111 b. up, and Earthquake 91b. above. Silver Ring. Silver Ring was physicked on his return to Riccarton from Sydney, but he. is again in active work. He is regarded as a dangerous candidate for the Stewards’ Handicap. Concentrate. Concentrate has been doing solid pace work at Riccarton since his return from Sydney, and according to all reports is making satisfactory progress. Belvoir. It is said that F. D. Jones is considering tho tubing o£ the broken-windecl 3?>elvoir. This gelding would be high class but for his wind infirmity. Silvox Breaks Down. Dr. M. G. LouissOn has had an unfortunate experience with his two-year-old, Silvox, by Silverado from Toti dal Monte. The colt was brought to Trentham for the Wellesley Stakes, but he pulled up lame after a gallop on the eve of the meeting, and was unable to race. Knee trouble has been anticipated for some time, and it is feared that the colt’s breakdown is serious. This is bad luck for owner and trainer, as Silvox showed great speed on the training track, despite his extravagant action, and his second to Guarantee in the McLean Stakes was a very promising effort. Mr. Curry Returns to Duty. Following on the resignation of Mr.A. P. Wilson, who has accepted an appointment in Queensland, the New Zealand Racing Conference will invite applications in Australia and New Zealand for a stipendiary steward. In the meantime, Mr. B. N. Sandilands will officiate in the North Island, while Mr. G. K Curry will take up his old positioii in the South Island. Not Eligible. . The horses weighed for the Apprentices’ Handicap, a mile event, on the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s rdeeting, include several who are not eligible for the race. It. is restricted to hacks who have never won a race of eix furlongs or under. This latter condition debars Tippling, Eminent, Palantua, Revision, Fleeting Glance and Late Jest, reducing the field to' thirteen before the acceptances are due. Flemington To-day. The Melbourne Cup carnival will commence at Flemington to-day. Principal events are the Victoria Derby for three-year-olds, the Marybyrnong Plate for two-year-olds, the Melbourne Stakes at weight-for-age, and the Cantala Stakes and Hotham Handicap for handicap horses. With several New Zealanders engaged, more than usual interest will be taken in the racing by Dominion followers. The second day will be held on Tuesday, when the Melbourne Cup is run. Reminder. Final payments for the New Zealand Cup, Stewards’ Handicap, Welcome, Derby, and Oaks Stakes are due at 8 p.m. on Monday, when acceptances for the remaining events on the first day’s programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan Meeting will also be received. To Race at Ellerslie. W. Rayner left Wanganui for Aucki land yesterday with Midinette, Pomp and Spiral. The trio raced at the recent Avondale meeting without success, but they are none the worse for their efforts, in fact Spiral appears improved by his race. Midinette did not run up to expectations at Avondale, the reverse way of galloping evidently not suiting her, ibut she might do better on the Ellerslie course, especially as she will have over a week to'accustom herself to the righthanded going. Fancied for Stewards. Fair Weather, who lost by a nose to Lord Vai in that thrilling finish for the C.J.C. Sehvyn Handicap-on August 33, is fancied in the south for the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he has 7st. 41b. At Wingatui this month Fair Weather won the six furlongs Electric Handicap with Ost., and was third in the Shorts Handicap with Ost. 41b. He is a four-year-old gelding by Weathervane, and is trained nt Wingatni by J. Ruttledge for Mr. A. N. Smith.

Improvement Expected. Those associated with Gaine Carrington were not dismayed by the form of the Hunting Song colt at Randwick, and they anticipate an. improvement at Flemington (says a Melbourne writer). Gaine' Carrington is being specially prepared with a view to running in the Melbourne Cup, in which he will be ridden by the New Zealand lightweight, G. Humphries. Humphries intended to return to Iliccariton for the New Zealand Cup meeting hi November, but the part-owners of Gaine Carrington made sufficient inducement to bring about a change in plans. On Their Guard. After the recent doping scares at Handwick, Sydney trainers arc taking every precaution with their horses while in Melbourne. F. McGrath has a special man to guard Peter Pan. Denis Boy, Satmoth, and Lightning March, while J. King has a man in constant attendance around the stables of Oro and Turbine. By a Street. "Prince Foote was the best stayer I ever trained. If Peter Pan can prove himself to ibe. in the same staying class as Prince Focite, he should win the Melbourne Cup by a street.” —Frank McGrath, trainer of Peter Pan Compulsory Absentees. White Nose, winner, of the Melbourne Cup, is again a final acceptor, but N. Percival, who rode him, was one of the jockeys refused a license by the Voctoria Racing Club Committee this season. J. E. Pike, who won on Phar Lap two years ago, is under suspension. Riders who have previously won the race and who have mounts this time are J. Munro, Roy Reed and W. Duncan. A, Wilson has not been mentioned in the cables yet. lie won in 1922 and 1923. R. Lewis had a mount, but the horse has 'gone amiss. He has had thirty-four rides in the Melbourne Cup, beginning in 1896 with Onward. His record in th <5 race is four wins, four seconds and a third. He won on The Victory (1902), Patrobus (1915), Artilleryman (1919), and Trivalvc (1927). Rode Over .1000 Winners. It costs £5O to start a horse in the Melbourne Cup this year, the final payment, taken a week before the race, beiug £45. It almost-invariably happens that one or more of the final acceptors are missing when the field lines up at the barrier.. A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Silent Bird has injured a knee and may not start. This vveU-nainecl mare —she is by Magpie from Shut Up—is trained by her owner, Myles Connell. For years Connell was a leading Australian horseman with headquarters in Sydney. He has kept a record of all his mounts, and hjs aggregate was 5886 mounts and 1080 winners. For some years past Connell has been living in Adelaide. Like the former Melbourne trainer, Charles Wheeler, who won the great Flemington race with The Parisian and Patrobus, Connell finds the dry South Australian climate preferable for health reasons. WORK AT RICCARTON Concentrate in Strong Work HEAVY TRACK CONDITIONS Although it rained well into the night) to-day broke comparatively clear and overhead conditions were satisfactory for training at Riccarton (says Thursday’s "Sun”). Parts of the course were waterlogged, but the outside trial grass track, which was used for fast work, illustrated the truth of the often-heard contention that Riccarton is never unraceable. The track was holding, but not more than that, and it did little more than level the times of the fast workers. The early arrivals, of course, had the best of it, but none of these was pitted seriously against the watch. Horses that hit out better than the majority, without reference to times done, were Elude, Metal Bird, Full Crop, Argentic, Shatter, Rothen, Lord Masham, Pixie Gold and Water Polo. Riri, and Berate ran seven furlongs together in Imin. 35scc., but neither is racing at Motukarara. Shatter gave Craigavon three lengths’ start and beat him. home over a mile in Imin. 48sec. Shatter did not appear to be greatly hampered by the conditions. Later, Concentrate covered a mile, with Top Rank carrying him along for two furlongs. The Cup candidate was doing it at little 'better than three-quarter pace. Night Flyer and Ramo cut out seven furlongs in Imin. 35sec. Adelphi had Tout le Mond in front of him throughout in a six furlongs gallop which took Imin. 23see. Neither acted very well. . Suncloud and Polydora required Imin. 24 3-ssec., finishing together. Earthquake, paired by The Sun, made good practice by clocking drain. 21 4-ssec. She is in nice shape. Metal Bird’s run in Imin. 19 4-ssec. was a very pleasing effort. He began well and carried on at an even rate. Rocket and Fleeting Glance also ran six furlongs in company. Grampian, with Helen Gold, took Imiu. 23sec. Evidently he is not a mud-horse. Over five furlongs Weatherly beat Taunton in Imin. 7 3-ssec.; Argentic, Imin. 6 4-ssec., the last four in 52see. — a creditable performance. Belvoir also went five, but was stopping. Wise Choice beat Sharp Thorn in Imin. 7sec. With a good weight, up, Elude ran home the last half-mile of a work-out in 52sec. He is a great horse for heavy going. Water; Polo was doing better than Night Guard to register 52 2-ssec. Sam Smith and True .Shaft took 53 2-sscc. Pixie Gold beat Gold Cross, going nicely at the finish, in 52sec. Night Recital beat Battle Hero in 52 3-ssec. Full Crop, a Stewards’ Handicap candidate, easily accounted for Piccard in 53sec. Dorian and Morcpork were not timed. Lord Masham and JJsquebaugh ran four up the back in 52 2-ssec. Golden Dart beat Robin Hood in 53 2-ssec.; Tea Garden and Reserve Fund. 52 3-ssec. Juniper, up the back, ran the first four of five furlongs in 53 l-ssec. Shelter and Clorane, over the same ground, ran 53sec. for half a mile. Elgindale and Rothen answered the roll in 52sec. Both these went well. Grecian Prince, up the back, ran 53 l-ssec. Locksley and Chief Light cut out three furlongs up the back in 39 3-ssec. Htirlingham and Ranelngh covered a similar distance at the other end.

HEREMIA IN INDIA Runs Third and Second Mail advices from India state that the Auckland horse Heremia, who secured a first and a second at Poona in August, is continuing to show some iorm. At Poona on September 10 he ran llurd to Arthur and Lira in the Visitors Plate, one mile, for class 111 horses. A week later lie was second to Yuwili in the Elgin Plate, one mile and one furlong, starting a good favourite. In the first race he carried 8.1 and in the second 7.13. the winner on each occasion carrying 8.7. Heremia was ridden by E. C. Reynolds, of Sydney, who has since been reported seriously injured in an accident at Boors-

Melbourne Pony Race TWO LUCKY INVESTORS Paying £l2B/2/6 for 5/- on the straight-out totalisator, Codcllus established a Victorian record when be won the 'first division of the River Handicap at the Ascot pony races in Melbourne on October 18, the first day on which the totalisator was in operation at the course. The previous highest dividend for 5/-'was £37/7/6, paid by Mystery Ship at Mentone on June 23. L. Whittle, who rode Mystery Ship, was successful also on Codellus. Two tickets were taken straight-out on Codcllus, and a large crowd gathered round the “pay-out” windows in front of the totalisator to watch the fortunate investors. The crowd was disappointed, however, as one of the backers—-a woman — collected her dividend in the manager’s office, and the other—a man —intimated that be would collect his dividend at the totalisator company’s office in the city. For a place Codellus paid £l3/4/- for 5/-, and one of the tickets on him was taken by the foreman carpenter employed on the totalisator building. Promissa, who finished second, paid £B/8/- for a place. The lucky woman investor on Codellus did not forget the totalisator staff. She gave the manager a £5 note to “let the staff do as They like.” The manager handed 7/6 each to 12 girls working in the paddock totalisator and 10/- to the girl who issued the winning ticket. Moro than 50 years ago the record totalisator payment for Australia was established when D.O.D. won the Goodwood Handicap of 1881 ini Adelaide. Only £1 wag invested on him in the machine, and his return was £836. It is not a record as far as New Zealand is concerned, for Wairoa Belle returned her solitary supporter £1033/5/- ftr £1 when she won at the Nelson trotting meeting in 1920. In England a couple of years ago n hurdler paid at the rate of 3400 to 1, while It is on record that in Shanghai a wire ner returned odds at the rate o£ 3037 to 1. These are claimed to be the two most substantial totalisator records in the world.
