WINTER CUP GOLF

Some Runaway Victories HUTT CLUB TOURNEY Samples of Sterling Play CONDITIONS NOT EASY The Hutt Golf Club’s winter cup tournament ,Tvaa continued yesterday, when the outstanding features of the second day’s play were the runaway victories recorded 'in the second round of the cup tourney in the afternoon. A. G. Sime (Westport), beat VV. G. Fisher (Hutt) by » up and S to play, and Harold Black (Miramar) outpointed F. C. Fryer (Napier) by the same margin. A blustering northerly wind made conditions difficult, and the play in the circumstances was more than creditable. The following were the results of yesterday’s play:— WINTER CUI’. First Round. X L. Elack (Hamilton) beat J. Shelly (Hutt), a and 4. _ H. E. ' Troutbeck (Napier) beat IL L. Moore (Titahi), 3 and 2. . A. G. Sime (Westport) beat W, Gregory (Wellington), 5 and 3. W. G. Fisher (Hutt) beat H. K. Adamson (Hutt), 2 UP. T. K. McGregor (Hutt) beat'C. L. Dcntice (Miramar), 1 up at the 20th. W. K. Cook (Hutt) beat G. A. Mills (Wellington), 4 and 3. ~,,,, F.' C. Fryer (Napier) beat J. C. Marchbanks (Waiwetu), 2 and L H. A. Black (Miramar beat I. Duncan (Waiwetu), 6 and 4. Second Round. J. L. Black beat H. E. Troutbeck, 1 up. A. G. Sime beat W. G. Fisher, a and 8. T. It. McGregor beat W. K. Cook, 1 up. H. A. Black beat F. C. Fryer, fl and S Flay ran true to form. J. L. Black (Hamilton) did a solid 76, bogey for the course, to beat J. Shelly (Hutt) by 5 and 4 in the first round. Black went out in 40 to his opponent’s 47, and turned for home with the commanding lead of 5 up. Black drew 6 up by taking the short eleventh (100yds.) in 8 to 4, but the Hutt colt got one back by recording a birdie 3 at the twelfth (350yds.). They halved the next two holes in 5 ajid 4, which gave Black the match by 5' and 4. They finished ou)t the round, the Hamilton player doing the run home in even 4’s, which gave him 76 for the round. H. E. Troutbeck (Napier) was too steady for the Titahi player, Max Moore, who was making bis first, appearance in an open tourney. A. G. Sime (Westport), amateur champion of the Dominion in 1921, handled his clubs very stylishly to dispose of W. Gregory (Wellington) by 5 and 3. Sime did a solid 77, getting a long ball off tho tees, keeping, excellent direction with woods and irons, and handling his putter dexterously. W. G. Fisher (Hutt) had an even tussle with his club mate, H. K. Ad.amson, whom he defeated by 2 up. Both played steadily. T. R. McGregor (Hutt) and C. L. Dentice (Miramar) had a regular marathon. Dentice was lup at the turn, but McGregor turned on some solid golf, and was 1 up with 2 to go, but he dropped a hole through faulty putting. They halved the eighteenth, in 4, and went on, the nineteenth also being halved in 4, At the twentieth a bad slice by Dentice from the tee gave McGregor his chance, and he took it to win a hardfought game by 1 up. W. K. Cook (Hutt) carried too many guns for G. A. Mills (Wellington). The Hutt player kept good direction in- tha high wind, F. C. Fryer (Napier), a noted long hitter, "was saniting them as hard as)' ever off the tees, and also handling his irons well. Though J. C. Marchbanks (Waiwetu) played steadily, the Napier man went strongly, and took the match by 2 and 1. Harold Black (Miramar) ; did a 79 to beat I. Duncan (Waiwetu) by 6 and 4. Kunaway Victories. There were some runaway victories in the afternoon, when the weather was finer, but a gusty northerly wind militated against good scoring. A. G. Sime made no race of it in his game with W. G. Fisher in the second round. Playing like a champion, Sitne won every hole on the out journey, which he accomplished in 38, bogey figures, to stand donate 9at the turn. They halved the tenth in 5, which gave the Westport player the match by 9 and 8. Fisher is hon. secretary of the Hutt club, and the strain of running a big tournament was not conducive to good golf. Sime however, played great golf, and it womd have taken a scratch player to have held him in the afternoon. They finished out the round, Sime doing the run home in 37, "which gave him a 75. . Harold Black was in his best form against F. C. Gryer (Napier) in the second round. Black went out in even 4‘s. and played so solidly that the best Fryer could do on the out journey was io halve the ninth hole, Black thus being 8 up at the turn. Black won the tenth, which gave him the match by 9 up and 8 to go.. Troutbeck made Jack Black go. his hardest in the second round to win by the narrowest possible margin. Both players found the wind trying, and the figures were not of the best. The Napier man was 2’ up at the turn, but Black squared the game by taking- the next two holes in bogey figures. Troutbeck drew 1 up again by taking the thirteenth in 4, but Black again squared things at the next hole, They halved the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth in 5,4, 4, and Black took the match by 1 up, winning the home hole in 4. The two Hutt men, T. R. McGregor and W. K. Cook, had a very even tussle. They ■were all square at the turn, but Cook drew 1 up at tho twelfth by stymieing his opponent. McGregor hit a magnificent No. 2 iron shot off the sixteenth tee, which landed his ball three feet from the pin, and he sank the putt, which squared the match once more. McGregor was lucky at the seventeenth", as he sank a long putt for a half in 4, after Cook was on the green in two. McGregor won the match by taking the home-hole in 4 to 5. Tho Semi-Finals. Tho aemi-finals will be played this morning, when J. L. Black will meet A. G. Sime, and T. R. McGregor will play IT. A. Black. The final will be played this afternoon. Bogey Competitions. 1 The first bogey match resulted in n ■tie between C. E, White (Miramar), and C. Holdsworth (Christchurch), with 3 up. The play-off resulted in a win for Holdsworth. . .
