WEATHER CLEARS
Canterbury’s Five Days of Continuous Rain FALL OF OVER 31 INCHES Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, Oct. 27. After five days’ continuous rain all over Canterbury, the weather cleared to-day. Shortly before noon the sun broke through the heavy clouds for the first time after an unusually long period of dull wet days. After a temporary relapse to dull conditions the weather became warm and sunny again in the early afternoon, and remained so until the evening, when heavy threatening clouds rolled up from the north-east. It is reported from country districts that the rain has ceased and flood waters in the rivers and low-lying areas of land are receding. The rains have had the effect of making the present month the wettest October since 1909, a remarkable position when it is remembered that half-way through this month the indications were that it would be one of the driest Octobers on record. In 190 S 6.17 inches of rain was recorded in October, and for the present month nearly 5 inches has fallen. Since the rain started on October S 3 up to this morning the fall totals 3.55 inches.
