CRICKET AT PERTH

England v. Combined Team PATAUDI’S FINE DISPLAY (Rec. Oct. 28, 0.30 a.m.) Perth, Oct. 27. England introduced Hammond, Allen, Duckworth, and Paynter in meeting a combined team, which includes Bradman, in the second match of the cricket tour. For the commencement of the match to-day the conditions were ideal, there being sunshine and a perfect wicket. The attendance was 11,000, and the gate £BB3. The following are the teams;— England.—Jardine (captain), Sutcliffe, Leyland, Hammond, the Nawab of Pataudi, Paynter, Ames, Allen, Verity, Mitchell, and Duckworth, with Bowes as twelfth man. Combined Team.—Bryant (captain), Fingleton, Richardson, Bradman, Lonergan, Hill-Smith, McCabe, Evans, Lovelock, Martin, and Halcombe, with Inverarity as twelfth man. England won the toss and.elected to baft. Leyland was out to McCabe in the second over. There were many changes in the bowling, Bradman, Halcombe, McCabe, Martin and Evans being tried, but did not show much sting. Play generally was slow, relieved by the smart fielding, especially of Bradman, who returned marvellously, also by the artistic strokes of the Nawab of Pataudi. Sutcliffe was solid, slow, and attractive, with strokes all round the wicket. He got 169 runs in 235 minutes, including one sixer and sixteen fours. Pataudi gave another fine display, using his wrists in most strokes without apparent effort. His century was got in 180 minutes. It ineluded eleven fours. Hammond gave his usual display of forceful defence, at times going half-way down the pitch to meet the slow balls. His footwork was beautiful to watch. Ames did not have sufficient time to show his qualities. McCabe was the best bowler, the batsmen treating him with great respect. The fielding was excellent, especially that of Bradman, with other representatives of eastern States. Following are the scores: — ENGLAND. —First Innings. Leyland, 1.b.w., b. McCabe 2 Sutcliffe, c. Inverarity, b. Evans .... IC9 Pataudi, b. Evans, c. Halcombe 128 Hammond, not out 37 Ames, not out ~... 15 Extras 7 Total for three wickets 359
