BRIGHT SPOTS IN THE NEWS
“People are unnecessarily perturbed about the fall of sterling, which, without the support of the exchange equalisation fund, is reaching its natural level in relation to the amount of trade with the outside world,” said a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Robern Horne, in London.
During September a total 0f_20,347 ounces of gold, valued at £113,21 5, was exported from the Dominion, according to a statement made yesterday by Mr. A. H. Kimbell. Under-Secretary for Mines. The amount was the greatest that had been exported during any single mouth for many years.
The works of Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Limited, at Portland, will be reopened next Monday after having been closed since October 8, owing to shortage of orders and the fact that all storage bins were full. All the employees, number about 120, will be re-employed.
An assurance that it was not the Government’s intention to abolish the separate account of the, Main Highways Fund was given by the Prime Minister, HL Hon. G. W. Forbes, when replying yesterday to a denotation.
