DISTRICT NURSING GUILD

Report on the Year’s Work ‘■During the year,” says the annual report of the District Nursing Guild of St. John, “1907 visits were paid by the sisters to patients in their own ■ homes, ’2704 cases were treated at the surgery, 23 were sent to the hospital, and there have been 12 deaths. A total of 301 additional names was placed on the register, and the total -number enrolled since the appointment of the first trained nurse is 6534. Although the number of cases treated was not so great as last year, a great deal of work had been done by the sisters to relieve distress among the sick poor; this had been made possible by generous donations in money and kind, both from individual donors and groups of friends working as guilds. “For a Christmas treat about 70 families were supplied with an excellent Christmas dinner, the plum puddings being made and collected by the committee, and presents of new clothes were given to each mother for her family,” the report states. “In this the guild was greatly assisted by handsome donations given by Mr. Aubrey Smith and Mr. Horace Smith, the Commercial Travellers’ ■ and Warehousemen’s Association, and other kind friends; also in February the adult patients and some children were given a bus ride to Heretaunga, where Mrs. W. Young and her young friends entertained them in her beautiful garden, her hospitality being much appreciated. “The Two Garment Society gave a very liberal donation of most useful, good garments for the patients, and wonderful gifts of clothing, groceries, etc., have been received from friends and various guilds; we especially wish to thank Mrs.-J. A. Plimmer, of Khandallah, who made it possible for 500 garments of various kinds, mostly for young people, to be made in one month at the beginning of the cold season. In addition to the guilds already working for our sick poor, we now have the Sunshine Sewing Club, Pezwyre Sewing Bee and Miss Catherine Young and friends doing excel-, lent .work.”
