WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

An Attractive Calendar Last year the Wellington Federation of AVomen’s Institutes compiled a calendar which was sold for the benefit of Federation funds. So successful was the venture, that the issue was soon sold out and many would-be purchasers disappointed. The Federation has prepared another calendar for 1933, which, in consideration of the growth in interest taken in gardening circles in the Institutes, is in the form of a “Gardening Calendar.’ This contains gardening notes appropriate to each month, together with suitable mottoes and literary extracts. The well-designed cover is decorated witli a dainty spray of kowliai blossom and is the work of Miss Dorothy Turner, Palmerston North. Silverstream. Silverstream Women’s Institute held a successful garden party recently in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Castle which they lent for the occasion. The competitions, which were in charge of Mrs. Williams, assisted by Sirs. Ferris caused amusement, especially that of carrying peanuts on a knife and putting them into a basin. The Arts and Crafts Circle stall presided over by Sfesdames Taylor and Holcroft, was crowded with beautiful articles at most -reasonable prices and was cleared by the end of the afternoon. Sirs. Richardson had charge of the 1/- stall and Sirs. Kitchen the flowers and plants. Tea was served by Slesdames Cleaver and SlcKenzie. An exhibition of work done by members created much interest. The October meeting of the Institute was most Interesting, Sirs. Castle presided and 60 members were present. There was a talk on the Zimbabwe ruins in Rhodesia by Sirs. Petherick, and a demonstration was given of moccasins made from sheepskins with the wool inside by Sliss Poppy Young. Belmont. Despite heavy rain, there was a good attendance at the recent meeting of the Belmont Institute, when two new members joined, bringing the total membership up to fifty. Sir. A. Leigh Hunt interested all present with a talk on “Trees,” giving a new conception of each person’s duty in the matter of conserving forest life, illustrating his talk with many interesting photographs. Mr. Hunt was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. tea was dispensed by Mrs. Weston and Sliss Wilson with helpers. Afterwards Sirs. Roskruge ably demonstrated the making of sealing-wax silhouettes, also displaying other artistic novelties. Sirs. Roskruge was given a posy of spi ing flowers as a token of appreciation.
