WAIRARAPA SHOW

The People’s Day UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS Results and Comments Dominion Special Service. Masterton, Oct. 27. Unqualified success has attended the sGth Annual Show of the 'Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society’s which concluded to-day at the showgrounds, Carterton. Beautifully fine weather favoured judging day yesterday, and although rain threatened continually to-day—People's Day—there was a large attendance of the general public. The outstanding feature of the show is the splendid condition of all the stock on exhibit, especially in view of the severe winter experienced. A beneficent and kindly spring has had its effect, and has done much to raise any despondent spirits in the country. The big event at the show to-day was the grand parade which took place in the ring at 2.30 o’clock. Headed by Jerseys, and followed by Ayrshires. Frieslans, milking Shorthorns, Red Polls, calves, draft horses, light farm horses with' hacks, including many graceful lady riders, bringing up the rear, the parade made an impressive showing. Particularly pleasing was the consistently high standard shown in all the horse classes. Farmers were observed to be taking particular interest in these, which was indicative of the way in which the horse is once again coming into his own. Hacks were well represented, and the president, Mr. G. W. Hart, remarked that tlie manners and paces horses were quite the best that had ever been seen in the show. The champion hack. Mr. P. Tilson’s Metallus, was an exceedingly fine animal, he said. There was much to interest the large crowd which thronged the show to-day. Judging in the many horse riding events proceeded all the day. which found many interested spectators watching the trotting, jumping, and children’s pony racing. A smart touch to the display was added by the presence of a large number of lady riders, who were mounted on some very attractive steeds. Keen interest was taken in the sheep and cattle exhibits, while home industries, and the various trade stands received their due quota of attention. The championship jumping competition was won this year by Mrs. H. Scales, Whakataki, on Clinker, out of a field of nine. The Clydesdale stallion championship was won by Donald McKenzie,: Woodlands, Masterton, with his stallion : Favourite Dene. The reserve championship was awarded to Arthur Tocker, Lowlands, Featherston. The champion mare was won by Donald McKenzie’s Maraekakaho Lady June. Gate-takings this year show a decrease of £46/18/6, compared with last year. This year’s figure is £347/10/0, HORSE EVENTS (Judge: Mr. A. J. Ayres. Tiratu.) .
