WAGES IN DISPUTE
Rates in Printing Trade NO AGREEMENT REACHED No agreement was reached in Conciliation Council yesterday wheu the hearing of the dispute between the organised typographical workers of New Zealand and their employers was continued. A deadlock was reached on the wages issue, and the proceedings were adjourned until November 15. When the hearing was resumed yesterday morning it was agreed to hold over the disputed classification clause and to discuss the wages clauses, which were the principal points of contention. The employers’ wages proposals provided for a reduction of approximately 10 per cent, from the net rates now being paid. The workers’ counterproposals were on the basis of the existing award. Discussion of the wages clauses occupied the greater part of the day, and, although concessions were mentioned and considered, no finality was reached. The adjournment decided upon is in accordance with the requirements of the amended Act. If no agreement is come to on November 15, or before that date, the present award will expire one month from the date of the commencement of conciliation proceedings.
