Miramar Ladies’ Final MRS, FERGUSON WINS Mrs. Blain Beaten, One Up SOME NOTABLE PLAY The 1982 .open championship tournament of the Miramar Ladies’ Golf Club concluded yesterday, Mrs. Ferguson. of Auckland, securing the title by uphill fighting efforts in both the semi-final and final. Mrs. Blain, of Wellington, was runner-up, one down from the winner. The tournament was one of the most successful ever staged by the club. Though the weather was bad on Tuesday, it was better on Wednesday, and was ideal yesterday, though, rain threatened throughout the day, and the fairways and greens had been slowed up by rain overnight. Open Championship. The following are the results of the open championship: — Semi-finals. Mrs. Blain (Wellington) beat -Mias Gambrill (Miramar), 5 and 3. Mrs. Ferguson (Auckland) beat Mro. Partridge (Hutt), 4 and 2. Final. Mrs. Ferguson beat Mrs. Elain, 1 up. Mrs. Ferguson (Auckland) had to play her best to defeat Mrs. Partridge (Hutt), who went out in 42, and turned for home 1 up by running down a 21ft. putt for a half in sat the ninth. The Auckland player took 45 for the. run out. Mrs. Ferguson, who is a valiant fighter, turned on great golf on the run home, doing the seven holes in 30, to wiu by 4 and 2. Jn the other semi-final,. Mrs. Blain proved too steady for Miss Gambri'l (Miramar). The Wellington player went out in 43 to 45, and stood 2 up at the turn. Playing very steadily, Mrs. Blain forged ahead on the home run, and took the match 5 and 3. A Stirring Final. Ouo of the largest galleries which has ever followed a final on the Miramar links assembled when Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Blain set out, with Mr. R. C. Butters as referee, to contest the final, about 1 p.m. Mrs. Ferguson took the first hole in bogey 5 to 6, but Mrs. Blain squared the game by taking the second hole in 4 to 5. Both played solid golf going to the third (431yds.), which was halved in bogey S's. Mrs. Ferguson pushed her tee shot out at the fourth, and found a bunker, the hole going to Mrs. Blain in 3 to 4. Mrs. Blain drew 2 up by recording a bogey 4t05 at the fifth (213yds.). They halved the next four holes, and Mrs. Blain, who had taken 40 for the out journey to Mrs. Ferguson’s 42, headed for home 2 up. They halved the tenth. in 5, but Mrs. Ferguson got one back with a birdie 4 to 5 at the eleventh (353yd5.). .Mrs. Blain drew 2 up again with a gem of a mashie .pitch at “Coates’ Fancy,” after Mrs. Ferguson had found the bunker to the right of the tee. Mrs. Ferguson got one back at the thirteenth (3Soyds.), which she took in 5 to 6 after stymieing her opponent. Mrs. Blain, however, drew 2 up again by taking the short fourteenth in 3to 4. , , , A booming drive and a well-played wooden second saw Mrs. Ferguson nicely on the green at the fifteenth in two. Mrs. Blain took an iron for her second shot, and was just through the green. She was too strong with her downhill chip, and the hole went to Mrs. Ferguson in 4 to o. The Middlemorc player squared the game once more by recording a bogey 4 to 5 at the sixteenth (270yds.). There .was great excitement among the large gallery as they drove off the seventeenth tee. Mrs. Elain topped her drive, while Mrs. Ferguson sent her tee shot •ailing far and sure. She followed this up with a good brassic second, but found a bunker with her bold wooden third. Mrs. Blain had a chance for a half, but failed with a short putt. and. Mrs. Fergu«on drew dormie one in 6 to 7. Both got good drives going to the eighteenth, but it looked all over when Mrs. Blain tonped her mashie third. Mrs. Ferguson boldly planted her mashie third on the green, but took three putts,and enabled Mrs. Blain to get a half in b. Airs Ferguson thus took the championship by 1 up, after a contest which had thrilled ve large gallery. Airs. Ferguson came home in 42. which gave her 84 for the round, while Mrs. Blain took 4o for the homeward journey, which gave her 85 for the round. Miramar Handicap The Miramar handicap competition resulted as follows : — Semi-finals. Mrs. Dalgleish (10) beat Miss G. Bpliam 4 °Mrs. U siater (7) beat Mrs. Dodson (11), 1 up at the 19th. Final. Mrs. Slater beat Mrs. Dalgleish, 1 and -. Foursome Handicap Xo fewer than 156 entries were received forff the handicap foursome competition Testorday, which resulted iu a tie between Mrs. Brodie and Miss McClure and Miss Dawson and Miss Evans, who both finished 2 down. Miss Brodie and Miss McClure won oU a recount over tho last nine holes.

Presentation of Prizes After the finals had been completed, com•netilora and visitors were entertained by the Miramar Ladles’ Club at afternoon tea. The captain of the club, Mrs. H. Guy Dldsbury, expressed the pleasure It had been to welcome so many visitors. The club was especially pleased to welcome such old players as Mrs. Firth, Mrs. R. R. Holmes, and Miss Reid, of Auckland. They hoped that all had enjoyed themselves, and would turn up again next year. The prizes won at the tournament were then presented by Mrs. Mabln, wife of the president of thO Miramar Golt Club. Mr. A. Marsden, captain of the Miramar club, voiced the pleasure it had given the club to sen so many competitors nt the ladles’ open tournament. .Miramar had a reputation for wind, and although the weather had not been on Its best behaviour on Tuesday, ho hoped that conditions on the other two days had compensated tor this. The excellent manner in which the tournament was controlled was the theme of much favourable comment. Those responsible for the smooth running of. the tourney were Mrs. Dldsbury (captain). Miss G. Tingey (hon. secretary), Miss F. Low, and Miss Taylor. ■
