DOG ATTACKS BOY Bites Inflicted on Ann "I think this dog should be destroyed,” remarked Senior-Sergeant H. IL Butler in the Petone Police Court yesterday when charging Elizabeth Jane Brattle with being the owner of a dog which attacked a young boy, Arthur Drain, and bit him severely. The boy showed two deep bites bn his arm, which bad necessitated medical attention. Mrs. Brattle asserted that the dog, which was a German collie, was not vicious, but that the boy had annoyed it by tapping it on the head. "The dog growls viciously when anyone comes near,” pointed out SeniorSergeant Butler. . "It always growls, but it is quite all right when you get near it,” replied defendant. "Well, the constable refused to go near the place,” observed Mr. Butler. “I eannot risk the life and limbs of people in this way,” said the magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M. Findlay submitted that the offence occurred through ignorance and also to some extent through carelessness. Defendant was now out of the milk-vending business, and there could be no repetition of the offence. LOWER HUTT LODGE The fifth meeting of the Te Atamai Encampment No. 11, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Methodist Hall, Lower Hutt, recently, fhc Chief Patriarch, Mr. C. E. Tanner, presiding. No patriarchs were reported sick or in distress. Two patriarchs were advanced to the Golden Rule Degree, and it was decided to keep up the work of the degree teams by further ritual practice. ■ Patriarch S. Richards presented a "500” shield made from knotted to taro, suitably inscribed and fitted with small shields. This trophy, which will be known as the "Richards Five Hundred Shield, is intended for competition between -the Port Nicholson Encampment, Wellington, and the Te Atamai Encampment, Hutt Valley. , Supper and card games brought the evening to a close. HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT The concert given by pupils of the Hutt Valley High School some weeks ago was repeated in King George Theatre on Tuesday evening in aid of the mayor s relief fund, but the attendance was small. Councillor F. Campbell, in the unavoidable absence of the mayor, Mr. W. T. Strand, thanked Mr. H. P. Kidson, heaamaster of the school, for his courtesy m allowing the entertainment to be held, the performers for the excellent concert, and those present for attending. He also reminded them of the revue by Wellington performers which will be held in the theatre next Tuesday; evening for the same fund, and solicited their interest and patronage.
