BIG SUM INVOLVED
“In Neighbourhood of £1000” BUSINESSMAN CHARGED. “I would ask that the bail in this case should be made substantial,” said SubInspector Ward in the police Court yesterday morning in asking that a defendant described as a manager should be remanded until September 13 on a charge of having received £26 and failing to account for same to a particular company. Sub-Inspector Ward said that the amount involved was in the neighbourhood of £lOOO. Counsel for the accused said that the present was one of a series of charges involving a large sum. The accused was a married man, with seven most-of whom were grown- up. The arrest had come suddenly, and until the facts were before the Court he asked that the name ,of the accused should be suppressed. The magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., granted the remand, and fixed bail at £250, and one surety for a 'like amount. An order was made suppressing the name of the accused.
