Another British Venture Next Year UNCONQUERED PEAK (Rec. September 5, 5.5 p.m.) Official Wireless Rugby, September 3. Another attempt to conquer Mount Everest will be made by British climbers next year. This announcement is made in a letter from the Royal Geographical Society, which states: “The Mount Everest Committee has received from the Government of India, through the Secretary of State, the consent of the Dalai Lama for a British expedition to Mount Everest m 1933. The committee will make an announcement of its plans in due course.” The letter is signed by Admiral Sir William Goodenough, President of the Royal Geographical Society, and Brigadier-General Bruce, who was the leader of the 1924 expedition. , .. . Brigadier-General Bruce hopes that by the beginning of May the expedition will be well up the mountain. The attempt to climb Mount Everest began with a reconnaissance expedition in 1921, followed in 1922,1924, and 1925 by further ventures, but up to the present the mountain has proved unconquerable. It was in 1924 that G. L. Mallory and A. C. Irvine lost their lives in an attempt to conquer the last 1000 feet of the ascent. It was established beyond doubt that they had reached 28,000 feet, but the manner of their death could only be conjectured. ' ■ '•
