Gladys Cooper was one day walking along Piccadilly with Ernest Thesiger, an accomplished but rather affected actor, when they ' niet Somerset Maugham, the famous dramatist, whose ready wit is admired and feared by most people who meet him. Said Thesiger : “Look here, Maugham, why don’t you write me a part in one of your plavs?” Quick as a flash, Maugham replied: “I do —but Gladys Cooper always plays them!”
