THE GAME OF CHESS

Otago Club v. Wellington WIN FOR SOUTHERNERS The captains of the Otago and Wellington Chess Clubs have reached agreement regarding the five unfinished games of the recent 20-aside telegraphic match, and it will, therefore, not be necessary to send these positions to Auckland for adjudication. A telegram was received on Saturday from the hon. secretary of the Otago Chess Club stating that the proposals of the Wellington olub had been accepted. Wins for the Wellington club are therefore scored by G. P. Anderson, Dr. D. F. Myers, and R. G. Didsbury. The game at board 11 between R. C. Sim (Wellington) and J. J. Marlow (Otago) is a draw, and R. Watt scores for Otago at board 9. The Otago club thus wins the match by two games (11 — 9). The success of Mr. R. G. Didsbury in his first telegraphic match is a reminder that his grandfather, the late Mr. George Didsbury, who was Government Printer when he died in April, 1893, was for some years one of the club's highly-esteem-ed xlce-presidents. He won the club’s handicap tourney in 1880 (16 entries) and played with much success in the telegraphic matches, and Town y. Civil Service fixtures, of the earlier years. The full score of the match is as follows :—

Nineteen matches have now been played between these clubs, of which Wellington has won' 16, Otago has won two, and one ended in a tie. Club Championship of N.Z. The Otago v. Wellington match, reported above, was the inter-island final for the club championship of the Dominion.
