PROFESSIONAL BOXING

Oxley and Leckie Matched BOUT AT PALMERSTON Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 5. The executive of the Manawatu Boxing Association has matched Johnnie Leckie, of Napier* and Ted Oxley, of Pahiatua, for a 15-round professional contest to be held-at Palmerston North on September 19. The executive considered the question of conducting future bouts at the Opera House. A letter was received from the Manawatu and West Coast. A. and P. Association intima ting.'the lowest. terms .on . which . the association could hire the sports stadium. The executive decided not to accept the A. and P. Association’s offer. Messrs. G. Watchorn, J. Louisson, B. McGrath, and R. E. Hatch were appointed judges for the Manawatu amateur championships on September 14. AMATEUR TOURNAMENT Junioi* Championships Representatives of ten affiliated amateur boxing clubs will ho seen in action to-night, when the first night’s contests of the junior championships will be held at the Winter Show Stadium. ■When it became evident some years ago that in some weights there was an unwieldy number of entrants, with only a proportion “class’ enough to warrant entering for senior championship honours, the Wellington Boxing Association decided to delegate to its chibs the running of junior championships, and the Miramar club promoted two classes. From this modest beginning the fixture has become of such importance as to make it necessary for the association to run a two-nights’ tournament. • To-night some eighteen bouts are scheduled to be held, and, allowing for defaults, an extended and interesting evening’s boxing should be assured. With the low admission prices the tournament should attract a large audience each evening.
