Masterton’s Sketch Club ITEMS FROM WAIRARAPA Dominion Special Service. Masterton, August IS. A total sum of £lO3/2/7 was raised as a result of a shop day and street collection held in Masterton yesterday in the interests of distressed families in the town. The Central Relief Committee, on which is represented every charitable organisation in the town was responsible for the effort, the result of which is considered very gratifying. The shop day was organised by Mrs. W. H. Jackson, and the returns of the various stalls were as follow: —St. Vincent de Paul, flowers, etc., £5/17/2; Knox and St. Matthew’s ladies’ guilds, produce, £0 11/31 ; Navy League and Plunket Society, cakes, ete., £l2/9/1; Lansdowne Sewing Guild, sweets, £2/15/2; Congregational and Kuripuni ladies’ guilds, sewing, etc., £3/9/4; Methodist Ladies’ Guild, savouries, etc., £B/7/3; Women’s National Welfare League, jumble, £B/10/74 ; Salvation Army, books, etc., £3/1/5; Cubs, copper trail, £l/11/-. The street collectors who raised a' total of £47/10/3 were under Mesdames T. Jordan and J. Caselberg. School Term Ends. Practically all schools, both primary and secondary, will close for the. term vacation to-morrow, the one exception as far as Masterton is concerned being that of St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls, which ended the term to-day. The children attending primary schools will reassemble on Monday, September 5, to continue the year’s work, but the scholars of secondary schools will enjoy an additional week’s holiday, as they will not resume their studies until Tuesday, September 13. In the case of the Masterton Technical School, however, a . resumption will be made on Monday, September 12. The Solway College is following the usual rule by closing to-mor-row and reopening on September 13. Masterton Sketch Club Successes. On account of the short notice given of the opening of the exhibition at the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui, Miss Cresswell was the only member of • the Masterton Sketch Club to get a few pictures away. All the pictures sent by Miss Cresswell were hung, and one, “Primroses,” was mentioned as of special merit. Work by members of the local sketch club has been hung in Wellington, Palmerston North, and Wanganui this year, and several of the artists were specially mentioned. A picture which also commanded attention at Wanganui was one exhibited by Mr. E. Gully, formerly of Masterton. Masterton League of Mothers. The third annual meeting of the League of Mothers was held in Masterton yesterday. The meeting was opened by Mrs. L. B. Maunsell, who said that it was with great regret that she would ibe unable to carry on as president, as she was leaving Masterton. The speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. J. S. Elliott, Dominion president, and Mrs. E. O. Blainires, both eulogised the work carried out by Mrs. Maunsell. The election of officers resulted as follow President, Mrs. J. Miller; vice-presidents, Mesdames E. O. Blamires, J. Davies and E. J. Rich; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs. W. A. Mitchell ; magazine secretary, Mrs. Judd. During the afternoon several musical items were rendered by Mrs. H. M. Morton and Miss M. Watson. The accompaniments were played by Miss Campbell. Two recitations were also given by Diana Maunsell. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Kilgour, Ball, Wilson. Williams, and Welch. Pahiatua Music Examinations. The results of the music examinations conducted in Pahiatua by the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music, London, are as followßudiments of Music. —Pass: Lawrence G. Au amusing play, “Postal Orders, was presented at the monthly meeting of the Tinui Women's Institute. The cast consisted of Mrs. Horsborough, Miss R. Schofield, Mrs. Newman, Miss Speedy and Miss K. Langdon. A competition, “Book Titles,” was won by Mrs. C. Beiliss. Miss Speedy was second, and Mrs. F. Bennett third. The winner of another competition held during the afternoon was Miss Langdon, while Mrs. Horsborough was second, and Mrs. Carmen third. The best article made from not more than a shillings’ worth of material was a footstool made hy Mrs. F. Bennett. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Atack. and Misses M. Innes and J. Holdsworth. Social Items. Mr. and Mrs. S. Vondersloot, The Terrace, Wellington, were visiting Masterton recently. Mrs. D. M. Graham, Cole Street, Masterton, is visiting Hawke's Bay. Mrs. J. A. Jones, Wairarapa, is on a visit to Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Carter have returned to Masterton from a visit to Hawke's Bay. Miss Peggy James, Pownall Street, Masterton. has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Miss N. Carter, of Clive, is visiting Masterton. TAWA FLAT’S PROGRESS Meeting of Association Tawa Flat. August 17. The annual meeting of the Tawa Flat Progressive Association was held recently in the schoolroom. Tawa Flat. Mr. W. A. Boyes occupied the chair. The chairman said that during the last year a great deal of useful work bad been done by the association for the advancement of the district. The funds were in a healthy condition, and the membership kept increasing, which augured well for the future of the association. The following officers were elected President, Mr. Leigh Hunt: vice-presi-dents, Messrs. E. Windley. R. W. Bothamley. A. B. Sievwright. R. G. Mexted. F. Ongley. and J. Hunter; chairman, Mr. W. A. Boyes; secretary. Mr. A. Walker. ENSILAGE AWARDS Norsewood Results Dannevirke, August 18. The ensilage competition conducted by tho Norsewood branch of the Farmers Union has been judged by Mr. J. M. Palmer, instructor in agriculture for the Hawke’s Bay district. The following are the results with the comments of the judge:—“Mr. 11. A. Olsen secured the first award with Joi points for a hillside pit. The method adopted by this competitor was excellent, lie continually tramped the material with horses as it was being built up,, and the product came out with the minimum of waste. The second award was secured by Mr. A. McQuade, who gained 93 points with a stack made from an autumn cut of grass which was of better quality than that of the winner. There was a little more waste which lost him the winning position. Mr. P. C. Olsen, with a stack, and Mr. W. Jenkins, with a pit, were equal for third place with 921 points.”
