Motor Accidents
Sir, —Sir Michael Myers, in common with other judges, draws attention to the growing number of motor accidents and to the “blended” justice when the responsible parties come before the courts. His Honour suggests a remedy for removing the blend. What the country really wants is a remedy for the accidents. Of course there always will be accidents, but it is surely possible to bring about a reduction, by co-ordinated action by the public bodies responsible for seeing the regulations carried out. On Tuesday last I saw a motor-lorry along Lambton Quay skid fully four times its length when the driver applied the brakes in an emergency. Fortunately the vehicle swerved well to the right at the same time, otherwise there would have been a terrific smash with a well-laden car turning the corner. Had anything been proceeding in the opposite direction a serious accident would have been unavoidable. BRAKE SAFE. Wellington, August 17.
