TO RETIRE NEXT YEAR
Law Society Secretary MR. HAWKINS’S CAREER It is announced that Mr. W. A. Hawkins, who has held the position of secretary of the New Zealand Law Society and the Wellington District Law Society since 1925, will retire early next year. Before he was appointed to his present position he had a long career with the Justice Department, being from 1914 until 1925 Registrar and Sheriff of the Supreme Court in Wellington, as well as Registrar to the Court of Appeal. Mr. Hawkins joined the Justice Department in 1882 at Invercargill and was later at Christchurch until 1890, when he went to the Marlborough district, where gold was being sought Until 1894 he was Receiver of Gold Revenue and Mining Registrar at Havelock, Cullensvllle, and elsewhere. After being at Blenheim for a year he came to Wellington as Deputy Registrar and Sheriff of the Supreme Court, and in 1906 was appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court at Auckland during the absence of the Registrar, who was then on leave. In 1908 he was appointed Registrar and Sheriff of the Supreme Court at Dunedin. Two years later Mr. Hawkins was transferred from Dunedin to Christchurch, where he held similar positions, and in 1914 was promoted to Wellington. His retirement took place in June, 1925, and shortly afterward he was appointed to the Law Society.
