ODD-JOB WORKERS
Vegetable-Growing Time FREEDOM NOT CHECKED Some of the relief workers apparently believe that the garden allotment vegetable growing scheme is going to prevent them picking up odd jobs on the days they are not employed under the No. 5 scheme. According to those interested in promoting the scheme this idea is quite wrong, and it is not Intended that there should be any interference in any man’s undertaking odd jobs to fill in his off days. "How these men get such notions is one of the puzzling things," said an official. “Take as an example the 2j-day men.. That means they are off Sj days every week. Now the plots of ground which we propose to give a man to work are 60ft. by 90ft. How long each week is that man going to be occupied once his seeds or plants are in? It might take him an hour a day—an hour, then he is finished. He has to keep his plot clear of weeds and generally in good nick. Why, after the land is broken up, cleaned and sown there’s nothing in the work. . . . Besides, he gets all he grows for his own consumption. . . . That is going to help the larder considerably.” BERHAMPORE EFFORT A scheme for providing garden plots for relief workers in the Berhampore district was outlined on Tuesday evening by Mr. F. 8. Pope, chairman of the central distress committee, to a wellattended meeting held at St. Cuthbert’s Hall. A committee was set up to put the scheme into operation. Mr. A. Cassie, the secretary, whose address is 45 Stanley Street, will be glad If those requiring seeds and manure will make application to him, stating if they have ground attached to their premises or if they require plots. Applications must be accompanied by relief workers’ cards.
