INTO ITS STRIDE

Fellowship of Service MORE HELPERS NEEDED Much helpful work for the relief of distress has already been done in Wellington by the Fellowship of Service (the Richmond Scheme), which was inaugurated at a meeting held at Government House on April 29 last. The organisation is now well launched on its career but, like many another which aims at service to those in distress, it still requires more people who are willing to help with its work. Conveners have been appointed and have enrolled helpers in every district save ' one in Wellington and the suburbs. Each helper as enrolled is appointed to a family In need, and a great deal has been done as a result. In spite of the difficulties at this time it has even been possible in some cases to obtain permanent' employment for an unemployed man or girl. “When starting this work,” said Mrs. Harold Johnston, the organiser, to “The Dominion” yesterday, “the organisers were told from many quarters that such visits as they proposed would be resented. In view of this it is interesting to be able to report that among the large number of houses already visited In every district helpers have in no single case been anything bnt welcome. Indeed the gratitude shown for kindly thought and interest is most warming to the hearts of those who are helping. More Helpers Wanted. “There were helpers,” Mrs. Johnston said, “who joined very reluctantly, much doubting tbo success of such work. Few could 'be Induced to leave It now; the friendships they have made with those they visit will be lasting ones. Only one thing is wanting for the complete success of the fellowship. The ground to be covered is very wide and many more helpers are needbd. No helper visits more than one family, so the call on the helpers’ time is not great. No money is given, so even those who are not rich can help', and by such work can build a happier country, We would say to those in doubt—go and talk to those who are already working and learn how much pleasure they find In such work.” All who are interested in the fellowship can obtain particulars ‘from Mrs. Harold Johnston, 25 Hobson Street, Wellington, who will be glad to tell them of the progress of the work in their particular district.
