RED CROSS CONCERT
Big Audience Helps Cause Promoted in aid of its funds .by the Upper Hutt branch of the Red Cross Society, the grand concert in the Majestic Theatre, Upper Hutt, last week proved an entire success, the theatre being packed to the doors. St. Patrick s College Orchestra (Silver-stream) made its first appearance in public, and was a feature of the programme, which was varied and popular. Under the baton of latber Feeley, the orchestra gave an excellent account of itself, and was warmly applauded. , , , Miss Carr gave a humorous sketch entitled “Polling' Day,” an item which proved very popular. A short playlet entitled “Life of th 6 Gipsy” (in S0I1 s)> was given by Misses I. and J. Shell, Miss Edwards, and Mrs. Hirschhorn and chorus. The Commercial Travellers Male Voice Choir, under Mr. J. Bishop, turned out in large force. Mr. R. D. CamphoJl Mr. J. H. Maunders, Mr. C. A. M Hson, Mr. S. E. Sargent, and Mr. W. Binet Brown singing solos. Messrs. Mgerton Pegg and Will Goudie sang a duet, lhe Two Beggars.” Before commencing the duet, Mr. Pegg announced that it had been sung for various charities, and over £lOO had been raised. He hoped the audience would respond liberally. During the performance coins rained on to the platform from all quarters of the house, approximately £3 being gathered in. Dr F. W. Kemp, president “ ike local Red Cross Society, thanked Father I‘eeley, of the St. Patrick’s College Orchestra, and his young musicians for their talented performance, and also extended warm thanks to Mr. J. Bishop and the members of his choir for their help for the cause. Dr Kemp explained that all services in connection with the gathering had been given free. In this particular he thanked the theatre proprietors and all others who had contributed to the success of The performance concluded with the National Anthem, after which vlslt °f® were entertained at supper by members of the Red Cross.
