GARBLERS AND THEIR DUTIES.

“Garbling” has several meanings. In one sense it has to do with nutmegs. The original garblers were appointed by an Act of Parliament in the days of James I. The profession is not yet obsolete. Kings, Cabinets, and Parliaments may come and go. The garblers, according to the magazine of the Port of London Authority, are still going— at No. 6 Warehouse on London dock. Their business is to sort spices, thus to prevent the selling of “Merchandise garbleable to the jeopardy of his Majesty and his subjects using the same in theire meates, drinkes, and other needfull occasions.”
