TROUBLESOME CURLS

Ways to Combat Them TRAIN HAIR TO LIE The girl with curly hair is not so lucky as her straight-haired sisters think her, particularly if she is a “sports” girl, says an exchange. If her hair is of the stiff or rather frizzy type, she probably has a daily struggle with it to keep it in order. For, after all, a permanent wave will do away with most of their troubles, and they can follow any fashion they like, in reason, without disturbing their “perm.” But her curls must be treated with respect, or else she is in danger of losing them altogether. She usually has to forgo fashion, for even after a visit to the hairdresser she finds that her natural kinks and curls are overwhelming the artificial wave which his skilful fingers have forced into her hair. The consequence is that in something like twenty-four hours her rebellious curls have had all their own way, and a fashionable “set” has finally vanished into thin air. This state of things is, primarily, because her hair is flat and light instead of tubular and heavy, so that it springs straight out from her head instead of lying smoothly. The First Thing to Do. The first thing to do is to have the hair properly thinned out by a careful hairdresser —and she must not be surprised if he uses a queer saw-edged pair of scissors and apparently starts cutting off chunks of hair. The sawedges control the amount of hair cut, as a matter of fact, and the superfluous locks are removed in the right proportion. Thon the hair must be trained to lie down, and trained in its youth. That is to say, it must be a daily process, since the hair is always growing. The application of a little non-greasy hair cream —such as may be bought at any chemist’s or hairdresser’s—will help this. Put a little on the hair with the palm of the hands and then brush and comb it thoroughly until it lies flat. The more regularly this Is done, the more successful will the treatment be, for it is Important to overcome the resistance of tho new hair near the scalp, Without, of course, injuring it. If the hair is washed and set at home, an extra heavy setting lotion should be used. A little of the hair cream may also be put on while the hair is still wet without doing any harm. This will help to make it supple and soft. No Damping. But never damp the hair with the idea of helping to keep the waves in or set them. This will not only have the effect of spoiling any existent wave and bring the frizziness back, but it is likely to make the hair extremely brittle. It is hardly necessary to stress the importance of softly pressing and pinning the hair into waves at night. But there is one hint which applies both to curly hair and the permanently waved variety. Always comb the waves at the back in the direction In which they are “set,” otherwise they will soon look untidy and may even disappear.
