STRAY-DOG TROUBLE Too Many on Petone Streets STEPS AT PREVENTION Reference to the large number of unattached dogs in the Petone streets was made by Councillor J. C. Burns, at the meeting of the Petone Borough Council, last night. Councillor Burns drew attention to the by-law which prohibited dogs on Jackson Street or the Esplanade without a chain or leash. The council probably did not desire to put the by-law into drastic effect, but the matter was becoming serious, both for shopkeepers and motorists. _ Instructions have accordingly been given to the Petone Borough Council inspectors to remove all stray dogs found on the streets, and not wearing this year’s registered collar, to the lethal chamber. BOROUGH BUSINESS Petone Council’s Meeting The Petone Borough Council held a meeting last night, the Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) presiding. There were also present: Councillors V. A. Noble, V. E. Jacobson, A. Scholefield, E. T. E. Hogg, R. W. Toomath, J. C. Burns, and C. P. Brocklebank. < Advice was received from Mr. W. Nash, M.P., that he had again been in touch with the Unemployment Board to see if it was possible for the board to carry on the usual relief payments to the workers in the case of minor accidents, and to make special arrangements covering the risk of serious injury or death. An invitation from the Wellington Free Ambulance to attend the laying of the foundation stone for the new buildings •was accepted. The district engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the arrangements made with Mr. G. London had enabled an additional forty , men to be placed on the Koro Koro Road. The Wellington Hospital Board wrote that with the death of Mrs. Bennett, the board’s representative in Petone, the position had become vacant. The town clerk, Mr. W. F. Stunnan, explained that the council could, by resolution, appoint a representative, who would hold office until the next ordinary election. Failing the council’s appointment within two months the Governor-General will do so by Order-in-Council.
