N.Z. Club Championship AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON When play in the Auckland-Welling ton 20-a-side telegraphic match ceased on July 30, six games were not completed. Three of these were disposed of by negotiation between the two captains, and the remaining three positions were sent to Dunedin, under mottoes, to oe adjudicated on by the Otago members of the New Zealand Adjudication Board. These awards, according to a telegram received from Dunedin, are as follow: — Games “A” (A. W. Gyles v. D. I. Jones) and “B” (C, G. Leunard v. A. K. Jessup) arc given as draws, while game “C” (F. W. Smith v. H. J. Thompson) is “a win for white” (Auckland). The Wellington club thus wins the match with a margin of 4 games, the final tally being Wellington C.C. 12, Auckland C.C. 8. According to advices received here during the week-end, the similar contest between the South Island’s two major clubs resulted as follows: —Otago C.C. 114. Canterbury C.C. 84. The Otago and Wellington clubs have therefore qualified for the inter-island final, which is scheduled to begin at 6.15 p.m. on Saturday next, when the Otago side will probably be strengthened by the inclusion of Messrs. O. Balk and W. G. Stenhouse, who did not play against the Canterbury C.C. Mr. Gould, the cx-Chicago expert, who played at board 2 for Auckland, left Wellington for Sydney on Friday, having decided to make his home in Australia, where there is more scope for his business. Working Men’s Club, played a double league fixture at the Gas Company’s Building on Saturday evening, when the Wellington club’s No. 1 team won the A grade encounter (4J — 14), while the Working Men’s Club won the B grade fixture by the same margin. These clubs first, opposed each other in May, ISS9. Of the 18 players who took part in the pioneer match of 43 years ago. only two are still active iu local chess circles, viz., W.
