WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Senior B Grade Finalists REP. TEAMS CHOSEN The chief attraction in the women’s hockey championship matches last Saturday was the meeting of Technical Old Girls and Upper Hutt at Newtown Park. Upper Hutt did not muster full strength, and Technical won decisively. Toa defeated Hutt comfortably, while Hospital, playing short, forced College Old Girls to a draw. Toa will now meet Technical Old Girls in the deciding match for the senior B championship. The senior A trial game was uninteresting. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior B. Tech. Old Girls 5 Upper Hutt .. 1 Hospital .... 0 College Old Girls 0 Toa 4 Hutt 0 SENIOR B CONTESTS. Technical Old Girls Win Well. Upper Hutt were unfortunate iu having to meet Technical Old Girls shorthanded. Miss M. Brown, the outstanding full-back in the grade, was absent, also one of the regular half-backs. A substitute was found for the half-line, and the side took the field one short, playing the one-back game. Technical Old Girls gave au exceptionally fine exhibition, and Miss T. Jurd, captain and centre-forward, has seldom been seen to better advantage. Although Technical won by 5 goals to 1, the score does not give a true indication of the actual play. Technical were certainly the better team on the day. giving a fine display of combiuation. but with a full complement Upper Hutt would have made matters very interesting for their, opponents. Although beaten. Upper Hutt were a long way from being disgraced, and the manner in which they carried on against heavy odds was a credit to the girls. Technical Old Girls opened with a leftwing attack, but Miss D. Wornall intercepted the pass in front of goal, and cleared to the line. From the roll-in Miss T. Jurd went through in a solo effort. Miss E. Simpson, Upper Hutt’s goalkeeper. bringing off a fine save. Miss G. Marshall, Hutt centre-half, sent the leather’ to Miss I. Shiel, centre-forward, who in turn passed to her right inner. Miss V. Murray, the last-named, after eluding two opponents, sending out to Miss M. Brugh on the right wing. The movement looked full of promise when Miss Brugh centred beautifully in front of goal, but Miss J. Cantrick. Technical right fullback, beat Miss Shiel to the ball by a fraction. A smart move initiated by Miss C. Robertson, Technical centre-half, saw the Upper Hutt citadel in danger. Miss Simpson again distinguishing herself in goal by clearing a very awkward shot from Miss Jurd. This was shortly followed up by Miss Simpson conceding a fruitless corner from a shot, from Miss I. Thomas. Technical Old Girls were now making the pace fast, and with the .forwards combining nicely, the Hutt rearguard was having an anxious time. Offside play was hampering the Technical attack, but eventually Miss Jurd was rewarded for her perseverence. Going through from almost the half-way line, she capped a fine solo effort by scoring from close range. Upper Hutt, despite their handicap, were giving a good account of themselves, but _ the forwards were not indulging in their usual effective combined movements. They seemed to be playing too much into the hands of the Technical ‘ defence. Just before halftime Miss Jurd gave Technical a 2-goals lead.

Right from the bully-off in the second spell Technical attacked, and a great scoring opportunity went b<—dug through Miss J. Marshall. Technical left-wing, endeavouring to go through on her own, instead of passing to Miss Jurd, who was in a good scoring "position. Technical pressed hard,’ and Miss Simpson again came to her team’s assistance with brilliant clearances off the sticks of Misses Jurd, Thomas, and S. Jackson. She used her pads and feet to great advantage. Miss V. Murray accepted a smart clearance pass from Miss G. ■ Marshall, and making good ground, passed to Miss I. Shiel, who, tricking her way through Misses Robertson and Manners, sent the ball back to Miss Murray. Drawing the backs out of position. Miss Murray smartly reverse passed to Miss Shiel, who went through to net a well-earned goal. This seemed to momentarily inspire Hutt to better things, for they immediately worked to Technical twenty-five, where Miss Murray sent across to her left inner. Miss J. Shiel. but the last-named lost a great scoring chance through over-eagerness. A long clearance by Miss E. Manners culminated in Miss M. Baillie, inside-left, scoring a lucky goal. Miss Simpson miskicked in endeavouring to clear, and the ball slowly crossed the goabline. The Upner Hutt team were now tiring, while Technical seemed almost as fresh as when the match opened. The only feature of the remainder of the spell was a beautiful individual effort by Miss Jurd, who. drawing Miss Simpson out of goal, ran the ball into an open net. Technical Old Girls won by 5 goals to 1. Messrs. R. J. Lloyd and A. Roxburgh were the referees. Toa’s Comfortable Win. The match between Toa and Hutt was keenly contested. Toa were unfortunate in not opening their scoring account in the first spell; several neat centres by Miss E. Te Hike just missed being converted by Miss L. Arthur. The sound half-back play of Miss Martin time and again checked Hutt’s progress. Her support to the forwards was timely and good. Neither team had scored when half-time arrived. The second spell saw the aggressive Toa team combining very effectively. Excellent work by Misses Martin and Parata. in the half-line, in supporting their vanguard, particularly Miss Te Hiko, enabled the last-named to secure two fine goals in fairly quick succession. Miss W. Katene, who had played . an excellent ya me. netted Toa’s third goal, while Miss Te Hiko smartly followed this up with her third goal. Toa winning by 4 goals to nil. Messrs. J. C. Cusack and (J. Gardiner were the referees. Hospital Do Well. Playing one short, and with three . emergencies, Hospital created a surprise by forcing College Old Girls to a scoreless draw. The game was fairly even throughout, both sices going very close to scoring. With better luck Hospital might have emerged winners. Their performance with a depleted team was of a high order under the circumstances. Messrs. C. Gardiner and C. Whyte were the referees. LOWER GRADE RESULTS.
