C. J. GOODE RESIGNS
Sequel to Inquiry
(Rec. July 28, 7.15 p.m.) Sydney, July 28.
Mr. O. J. Goode, Chief Transport Commissioner, this afternoon tendered his resignation in writing to the Minister of Transport, Mr. M. Bruxner. The letter of resignation contained the following passage: “I feel that the terms of the Royal Commissioner’s report leave me no alternative but to resign my office.” Mr. Bruxner comments that the report completely vindicates the present Government.
The former chief railway commissioner, Mr. W. J. Cleary, whom Mr. J. T. Lang retired, will be reinstated in his original position, also Mr. S. Maddocks, chairman of the Metropolitan Transport Trust. Amending legislation will be passed for this purpose.
The Royal Commissioner who inquired into the charges of misconduct against J. C. Goode, formerly Superintendent of Goods Traffic for the New South Wales Railway Department, presented his report on Wednesday. He found Goode was guilty of serious misconduct, amounting to fraud upon the Railway Commissioners, and said that three cheques drawn by S. E. Vernon which went through Goode’s bank account were paid and received corruptly.
