SURVEY OF WOOL
World Production and Stocks BRITISH EMPIRE SHARE By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, July 27. The Empire Marketing Board has Issued a 200-page elaborate statistical survey of Empire and foreign production of wool. The survey estimates the world’s sheep population at 800 millions, producing 3500 to 4000 million pounds weight of wool annually, of which 1500 millions, including the world’s best, comes from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. After reviewing production and prices for the past forty years, the survey concludes that there has been no exceptional increase in sheep population and wool production in recent years. The Empire is stated to have maintained its share of sheep at one-third, and wool production at a half. The Empire wool export trade is two-thirds of the world’s. There has been no abnormally large accumulation of stocks of raw wool in the principal exporting countries, It is stated, and no large stocks have accumulated in the effort to maintain prices, while proposals to restrict sales and stabilise prices have been vigorously opposed.
